12 Netflix Films to Make it Through Lockdown

School’s out, university has been suspended, the home is now the office. The majority of the country is spending a lot more time at home at the moment due to COVID-19, so why not tune out the wider world for a moment and enter the world of cinema?

While cinemas such as Odeon and Cineworld have closed across the country, a lot of cinefiles are missing out on much beloved trips to the movies. Whilst a few movie studios are bringing their new releases straight to streaming, it might be time to boot up the old Netflix account and check out some films you may have missed.

Here’s our 12 Netflix films to make it through quarantine.

A Quiet Place

Director John Krasinki (of The Office US fame) has delayed A Quiet Place: Chapter 2 due to Coronavirus, so now would be a great time to refresh the memory of this 2018 hit thriller. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where the Earth has been overrun by aliens, a tight-knit family must live in silence to survive.

Shutter Island

This Martin Scorsese 2010 classic won’t be news to anyone, but it’s one of those films you have to revisit every once in a while. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, a U.S. marshal’s investigation of a disappearance at a hospital for the criminally insane isn’t all it seems.

Monty Python’s Life of Brian

This one needs no introduction. Many argue The Holy Grail, many say Flying Circus, but Life of Brian is the Monty Python film that has stuck with me my entire life. Brian’s life is turned upside down as his fate keeps getting confused with another certain carpenter.

Shrek

You definitely need to watch this 2001 animated classic ASAP because it’s set to leave Netflix soon. So grab your nearest little one and watch this with them. Or on your own, there’s no one around to judge. Shrek and Donkey are on a mission to save a princess from a fire-breathing dragon.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Speed, violence, momentum. John Wick films are all always full of foot-to-the-floor acceleration. The hottest film of summer last year is on Netflix for that adrenaline rush we all need. How will John Wick survive with a $14 million bounty on his head? It’s Wick vs World.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

From one man vs the world to another. With films such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz under his belt, it can often be easy to forget some of Edgar Wright’s other masterpieces. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is eye candy for those who love video games and comic books, Wright doesn’t miss a beat in this 2010 sleeper hit. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) falls for delivery girl Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) but must defeat all seven of her evil exes in martial arts battles for her heart.

It

Stephen King is everywhere at the moment. Whilst still pumping out best selling books, his older material is still seeing love on both the big and small screen with Doctor Sleep being released in cinemas late last year and The Outsider being a focal talking point in the world of TV drama. Andy Mushietti’s 2017 retelling of It was well received by King fans as well as the rest of the world. With stand-out performances from the brilliant Bill Skarsgård as Penywise and the rest of the Loser’s Club, you might want to watch this one with the lights on. A group of outcasts face their fears to defeat a terrifying clown who is possessing their hometown.

Uncut Gems

Adam Sandler promised that if he didn’t win an Oscar for his performance in this 2020 thriller then he would try and create the worst movie he could on purpose – if that movie was out, it would be on this list. A24 are becoming a force to be reckoned with at the moment with several well-received cult hits such as Midsommar, The Lighthouse and Hereditary. Faced with mounting debt and angry collectors, a fast-talking jeweler risks it all in hopes of staying alive.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie

Rumblings of a Breaking Bad movie date back as far as the end of the iconic series. Questions were left unanswered, people wanted to know what happened to much beloved Jesse Pinkman. Vince Gilligan answered in 2019 with a straight-to-Netflix film starring Aaron Paul which follows on directly from the series finale which aired in 2013. It is a welcome epilogue to the Breaking Bad saga.

Spirited Away

A couple of months ago, Netflix made news with the announcement of several Studio Ghibli films making their way to the service for the first time. There’s a whole world to discover within those films and Spirited Away is a great place to start. Chihiro wanders into a magical world where a witch rules and those who disobey her are turned into animals.

Dunkirk

Where would this list be without a war film? The genre is still hot right now with Sam Mendes’s 1917 picking up accolade after accolade during award season this year. Dunkirk is Christopher Nolan’s take on a war film and his directive flair oozes throughout all 1 hour and 46 minutes of it. A time-bending retelling of a lesser known WW2 story with building tension throughout. Starring Tom Hardy, Harry Styles, Fionn Whitehead, and Cillian Murphy. This one isn’t for the faint of heart.

Wonder Woman

Sometimes you just want pure superhero action. DC’s take on a multi movie shared universe has been interesting to say the least. With hits such as 2019’s Joker and Shazam. And absolute flops such as Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. Patty Jenkins’s Wonder Woman fortunately falls on the better side of DC’s films. When Gal Gadot isn’t on Twitter singing John Lenon songs with her celebrity friends, she’s playing a very convincing version of Wonder Woman who leaves her sheltered homeland in hopes of ending a devastating war in the outside world.
