The cost of not taking their litter home, or disposing of it responsibly, has been felt by some.

This comes after 35 individuals who failed to pay their initial fixed penalties were issued with additional fines and costs totalling £15,455, including receiving a criminal record.

The latest convictions are for offences that took place in July and August of last year.

Keep Britain Tidy says more than two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day, which is an estimated street cleaning cost to the taxpayers of more than £1 billion a year.

Under section 87 Environmental Protection Act 1990, it is an offence to throw down, drop or otherwise deposit and leave litter.

Offences can result in a £100 fixed penalty, reduced to £80 if paid within the early payment period, or prosecution and a maximum fine of £2,500.

Fixed penalties for the above littering offences were issued by the council’s enforcement contractor LA Support Limited and took place within the following locations:

  • Washington Street
  • Park Street
  • Spring Bank
  • Beverley Road
  • Albert Avenue
  • Alexandra Road
  • Anlaby Road
  • Rugby Street
  • Spring Bank
  • Princes Avenue
  • Thornwick Close
  • Hessle Road
  • St Georges Road
  • Adderbury Grove
  • Ferensway
  • Prospect Street
  • Paragon Street
  • Holderness Road
  • De Grey Street
  • Whitefriargate
  • Jameson Street
  • Rugby Square

The council has other prosecutions pending and will continue to publicise these once they have been before magistrates.

Anyone issued with a fixed penalty notice for littering should pay it to avoid a fine and criminal record and this can do this by contacting the council’s enforcement contractor LA Support Limited by calling 0800 781 6229 or online here.
