Some of the large cinema chains have reopened in the past fortnight with controlled COVID safety measures to make sure it’s safe to go.
The big blockbusters might have been delayed, but there have been some decent films released recently. Alongside the return of some all-time classics, going to the cinema right now is a pretty decent night out. Here are 5 picks you might want to watch at the cinema this week…
Proxima (12A)
Eva Green gives a career best performance in this epic and emotionally charged new drama from acclaimed director Alice Winocour. Green plays Sarah, a French astronaut training at the European Space Agency in Cologne. The only woman in the arduous programme she has been chosen to be part of the crew of a year-long space mission called ‘Proxima’.
Unhinged (15)
If you love a tense thriller, this one’s for you… Academy Award winner Russell Crowe stars in Unhinged, a timely psychological thriller that explores the fragile balance of a society pushed to the edge, taking something we’ve all experienced – road rage – to an unpredictable and terrifying conclusion.
Inception (12A)
One of my favourite films of all time and I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since its first release! If you love a mind-bending Christopher Nolan film, this is one of his absolute best.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard, the film tells the story of a thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology and is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O.
Definitely one to see on the big screen again while it’s on.
An American Pickle (12A)
Adapted by Simon Rich from his 2013 New Yorker novella Sell Out, An American Pickle stars Seth Rogen as Herschel Greenbaum, a struggling laborer who immigrates to America in 1919 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family.
One day, while working at his factory job, he falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years. The brine preserves him perfectly and when he emerges in present day Brooklyn, he finds that he hasn’t aged a day. But when he seeks out his family, he is troubled to learn that his only surviving relative is his great-grandson Ben Greenbaum (also played by Rogen), a mild-mannered computer coder whom Herschel can’t even begin to understand.
100% Wolf (PG)
The story of 100% Wolf centres on Freddy Lupin, the heir to a proud family line of werewolves. Desperate to become a werewolf himself, Freddy is in for a shock when on his 13th birthday his first “transwolfation” goes awry, turning him into a ferocious … poodle. Just when Freddy thinks life can’t get any worse, he’s groomed against his will, chased into the streets and thrown into dog prison.
Can Freddy and his new streetwise friend, Batty, escape? Who is the sinister man following his every move? Despite his pink and fluffy exterior, can Freddy prove he’s still 100% wolf?
