Week four is upon us as I recommend five films that you should be hunting down at your local cinema this week. New films are still few and far between at the moment, but as more cinemas open their doors, we have some big new releases coming our way very soon. So, here are my picks for this week.
Les Miserables
Don’t let the familiar title fool you, this is no musical. This true-story drama follows events after the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the violence used by French police in Paris on October 14th 2008. Very well received by critics in its native France, Les Miserables has been directed by Ladj Ly in his full-length feature directorial debut.
Unhinged
Another new one for the list, and while not particularly warmly received by critics, this suspense thriller starring Russell Crowe has been praised for its action and lead performance from the star. Crowe plays a mentally unhinged man who ends up in a cat and mouse game with police over the killing of his ex-wife. Taken-esque vibes abound, this is one worth watching for fans of the genre and of Crowe.
Black Panther
After the untimely passing of lead star Chadwick Boseman, selected Cineworld cinemas are bringing back this game-changing MCU flick in honour of the actor. For those unfamiliar with the MCU by this point, it probably isn’t for you, but for those who want to pay their respects, this could be the last chance to see Black Panther on the big screen.
After We Collided
Based on the 2014 romance novel of the same name, this follows the love life of two young adults. Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) and Tessa Young (Josephine Langford) go through the aftermath of their breakup. While Hardin falls into some bad habits, Tessa, armed with a new confidence, lands the internship of her dreams at Vance Publishing Company.
Bad Boys for Life
Selected VUE cinemas are bringing back the third outing for Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. A surprisingly good film, this is definitely worth a watch if you didn’t get around to seeing it before cinemas were forced to close their doors.
There we have it, a mixture of new and older releases this week. Do enjoy yourself if you manage to get to the cinema, and remember, please abide by each chain’s social distancing guidelines.
