Absolutely Cultured have shared the details of their upcoming season, kicking off in October and running through December. A variety of cultural events, exhibitions and projects will be taking place in their Humber Street Gallery venue, across Hull and its communities.

Two new exhibitions will be open at Humber Street Gallery during this time; Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2022, a partnership show with Ferens Art Gallery and New Contemporaries, and Lou Lou Sainsbury’s Earth Is A Deadname, showing with support from Gasworks, London.

Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2022 features 48 artists across two venues in Hull and will run until 27 November before travelling to the South London Gallery. Established in 1949, New Contemporaries gives visibility, recognition and support to emerging talent from across the UK, enabling artists’ practices to become more sustainable long-term.

Based on a series of “trans-for-trans” writing workshops that have taken place in Spring 2022, Earth is a Deadname is the first solo exhibition by Margate-based artist Lou Lou Sainsbury, installed first at Gasworks, London in July 2022. Identifying as a time traveller, Sainsbury works across film and performance, poetry and textiles. For her first institutional solo exhibition, opening on 14 December in Space 2, she presents a newly commissioned body of work that seeks to reimagine transgender experience beyond the limiting language of medical terms.

Alongside these exhibitions, Humber Street Gallery will be hosting supporting events as part of a public programme. This includes Lunchtime Curator Tours (every Thursday at 12pm). a special Kids Curator Talk (26 October) an in-person Artist Talk with Kialy Tihngang (10 November) and an Exhibition Launch for Earth is a Deadname (15 December). On the last Sunday of every month of the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2022 exhibition being open, visitors can join a free hourly tour of the works across both buildings, run by HEY! Volunteers. These start at both galleries on the hour from 1pm, with the last tour starting at 3pm. Visitors can turn up to either site to begin their guided tour.

In addition to this artistic programme, a variety of wellness activities and workshops will be available to visitors. Weekly yoga classes will continue every Wednesday and the popular Sound Bath experience repeats on the last Saturday of each month. Toile bring their collaborative workshops to Humber Street Gallery including block printing, clay painting, making Halloween decorations, and many Christmas craft opportunities; such as making cards, creating baubles and sustainable gift wrapping. Floral & Lace will also be offering two Christmas Wreath Making workshops (22 & 26 November), ready to get visitors in the festive mood for the season.

Tickets for all Humber Street Gallery events can be booked via the Absolutely Cultured website: absolutelycultured.co.uk/humberstreetgallery.

From Christmas parties to meetings, conferences to birthdays, the gallery along with its café and roof terrace bar, are available for hire. Visit the hires page for more information, email enquiries to the Venue Coordinator at info@absolutelycultured.co.uk or call 01482 323 484.

Beyond their Humber Street Gallery, Absolutely Cultured is bringing live performance to Hull New Theatre on 24 November presenting Nobody: A Dance Circus Adventure by groundbreaking company Motionhouse – performances take place at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. The show will be co presented by Motionhouse, Hull New Theatre, and Absolutely Cultured and is a fast-moving, highly physical show which explores the tension between our inner lives and how we make sense of the world around us.

Featuring Motionhouse’s renowned dance-circus style with its mesmerizing choreography and visual magic that sees the world on stage transformed through digital projections, Nobody is a highly relevant and moving show resonating with recent times. There will be a post show discussion with the performers and choreographer after the 7.30pm performance. A Motionhouse dance class will be hosted by Hull Dance on the 25 November aimed at local dance professionals, more details for this can be found on the Absolutely Cultured website.

Book tickets for Nobody via the Hull City Hall Box Office, call 01482 300 306 or at www.hulltheatres.co.uk.

In Gipsyville and Spring Bank, Absolutely Cultured will continue its social action work with communities – co-creating activities and artistic output, supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund. In partnership with award-winning theatre company Middle Child, the industrial heritage of the local area will be explored with residents at Gipsyville Library. Reminiscence sessions will also be run to give the community a chance to contribute their memories, stories and links to the history of their area.

At 91 Spring Bank, activity will take inspiration from the zoological gardens that used to be in the area from 1840 to 1861. Working with Handmade Parade, an award-winning community arts and parade specialist Community Interest Company based in Hebden Bridge, and Aba Daba Circus, residents will participate in a range of creative, heritage focused sessions and workshops built around this theme.

All of this season’s activity feeds into opportunities for the successful cohort of Absolutely Cultured’s INTER_CHANGE professional development programme, who have now been selected for 2022-23. The free 12-month initiative supports local creatives at the start of their careers. This year’s featured artists are Micky Anderson, Julie Corbett, Faith Foster, Holly Gibbs, Paige Graham-Buckle, Nathan Kirby, Liam

Watt Pattison, Thomas Robinson, Milly Rose, Caitlin Smith, Ruth Toynton and Antonia Walsh. A mix of dancers, musicians, fine artists, theatre practitioners, crafters and more.

These artists will work with the Absolutely Cultured team to co-create their experience across the year, based on their priorities as participants. Between October and December the programme will focus on bi-monthly group meet-ups supporting each other to find opportunities, a peer-mentoring, as well as workshops and artist talks in partnership with Artquest, New Contemporaries, and Motionhouse. Alongside this activity, there will be a visit to local arts organisations taking place in November

An associate group of 13 creative practitioners will also be supported and invited to participate in any broader developmental INTER_CHANGE activities and events.
