An adopted Hullensian’s guide to: The Avenues, Hull’s cultural neighbourhood

The Avenues—in this sense, including Princes Avenue; Chanterlands Avenue; and Newland Avenue—is a delightful amalgamation of a high-status residential housing area; a popular commercial high street; and a ‘studentville’ high street adorned by commercial and late-night venues. I can happily boast that three years of my life were spent living here all of which were equally eventful, enjoyable, and enriching; notably, many of my fondest memories include rambling along the many trails and chronicled streets that exist in the area.

Food and Drink

There is an abundance of food and drink venues on the Avenues, concentrated primarily on Princes Avenue and Newland Avenue, indeed, the area is very well known for its gastronomic venues.

On Newland Avenue, Zoo Café adds a bohemian touch to the Avenue’s food and drink scene. Here, customers can enjoy mountain-like portions of vegetarian and vegan-friendly grub at affordable prices in an imaginative setting that delivers a charming natural ambiance. The Zoo Breakfast which includes a lentil patty; fried eggs; tomatoes; mushrooms; hash browns; and homemade beans is certainly the menu’s highlight.

Additionally, Newland Avenue is also home to Uno’s Trattoria Pizzeria which plates up delicious Italian classics; the highlight of which being, in my opinion, the lasagne which is delivered in traditional Italian style and is a taste bud extravaganza. Interestingly, Uno’s has a cut-price lunchtime menu Tuesday to Friday making this restaurant a standout destination for students or those looking for a delicious meal at a bargain price!

On Princes Avenue, The Greek stands out above most thanks to its simplicity; friendly service; and scrumptious food. The Dolmades (a herby rice mix wrapped in vine leaves) are a must and if you are feeling peckish or are simply adventurous, I must recommend the gut-busting Gyros.

Another Italian restaurant to make this list (forgive my monotony) is Da Gianni which deserves mention because of its charming home-cooked Italian cuisine and intimate and warm setting. Now, having been here several times, I feel well-able to say that the Tirolese pizza is exceptional; although I risk doing an injustice to the rest of the menu which is also mouth-watering—the Penne Marinaio is another favourite of mine.  Additionally, Da Gianni has an endearing dining room that, as I have mentioned, is intimate and cosy.

Crafted, a restaurant, and bar with a late-night twist serve all-American-inspired comfort food and crafted beers, and imaginative cocktails. Crafted is the perfect place for those seeking an affable environment and it has carved a reputation for itself as an ideal late-night venue as it now transforms itself into a bar after 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Shopping

The Avenues has the usual suite of local amenities in the form of one Tesco Express and two Sainsburys Locals. Additionally, there is a Lidl not too far away on Beverley Road which just so happens to be opposite another Sainsbury’s Local.

Most of the retail shops are found on Newland Avenue which constitutes the shopping hub of the area. Zebra is one such shop; here, customers will find ethnic clothing; a range of jewellery; incense and essential oils; rings; crystals, and much more. Additionally, there is also Bed Boutique which is an independent boutique for on-trend affordable ladies’ fashion. Interestingly, Bed Boutique featured in the recent Hullraisers series!

It would be remiss of me not to mention Steve’s Cycles on Chanterlands Avenue which commands much respect and affection amongst the cyclists of Hull. Steve is ever-present in his shop, he provides a friendly service and endeavours to address every cycling-related put forward by his customers.

Nightlife

The Piper, on Newland Avenue, comprises the only nightclub in the Avenues. Monday, Friday, and Saturday nights are designated as club nights with Monday nights, in particular, being a favourite with the university students.

Additionally, there are a host of late-night venues such as Garbutts on Princes Avenue; Chants Café Bar on Chanterlands Avenue; and Larkin’s Bar on Newland Avenue. It is perhaps accurate to describe The Avenues as a premier location for late-night drinking in Hull, albeit without a wide selection of nightclubs to pursue afterward; however, this is often to some people’s tastes (including mine).

Culture

Pearson Park dominates the recreational landscape of the Avenues. With its main entrance on Beverley Road and another on Prices Avenue, Pearson Park is the meeting place of the Avenues; Beverley Road; and, feasibly, those slightly further afield. Interestingly, Pearson Park is the first public park in Hull and features an iconic ring of villa-type houses along its outside perimeter. Visitors to Pearson Park will be intrigued by the bandstand and conservatory greenhouse.

The Avenues is an eclectic mix with Chanterlands Avenue and Princes Avenue constituting typical middle-class areas whilst Newland Avenue is dominated by students and transient populations. In general, the Avenues was built as middle-class housing in the late 19th century—intriguingly, it remains popular with academics—and has been called home by a series of famous past residents such as Ian Carmichael; Amy Johnson; Philip Larkin; and Anthony Minghella.

Property

Typically, property in the Avenues is more expensive than elsewhere in Hull. For example, the average house price on Victoria Avenue over the last year is £264,494 which far exceeds the average house price in Hull which stands at £150,782. As I have alluded to previously, Chanterlands Avenue and Princes Avenue are chock-full of Victorian-era middle-class housing whilst Newland Avenue features typically Edwardian-era terraced housing.

Transport

The Avenues are well connected to the rest of the city as well as the East Riding as they are part of the city’s bus network with buses running every fifteen minutes or so. Additionally, Spring Bank Way and Anlaby Road are a short drive away, connecting the Avenues to Hessle and beyond whilst Beverley Road is on the doorstep which means Beverley and anything further North are also in easy reach.
