Step 1 of the roadmap out of lockdown began last week and with it comes a few changes to the rules. Alongside schools reopening, the Prime Minister announced that outdoor recreation, or exercise, with your household or 1 other person is now permitted.

The Stay at Home requirement remains, but people can now leave home for recreation outdoors such as a coffee or picnic with their household or support bubble, or with one person outside their household.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourite takeout cafes and coffee shops to help make your outdoor recreation as enjoyable, and as safe, as possible.

Planet Coffee

162 Newland Avenue, Hull

Planet Coffee is one of the city’s longest residents and one of the avenue’s grandest buildings. They’ve serve some amazing tasty coffee. Plus they have a large selection of milks and syrups to keep your coffee interesting. They also serve some of the largest coffee sizes I have ever seen. Their largest size, the obscene, is well…obscene… and will definitely keep you going throughout your outdoor recreation.

Barley’s

216 Newland Avenue, Hull

Barley’s were a newcomer to the avenue in 2020 and have been serving vegan delights ever since. If non-dairy is your thing, then Barley’s have got you. They serve great coffee alongside the finest vegan milks on the market. Plus they have some unbelievable cruelty-free sandwiches and other treats to pad out your picnic.

The Greek

78 Princes Ave, Hull

Another great option for a picnic in the park is The Greek which is just a small walk away from Pearson Park. The restaurant makes amazing, authentic Greek food which is easy to eat with your hands – making it perfect for a picnic.

Two Ginger’s

Paragon Arcade, Hull

Two Gingers is probably the most popular coffee shop in Hull and it’s easy to understand why. The stylish shop is located in the beautiful Paragon Arcade and they serve up some really lovely tasting coffee. They also have a range of sweet treats behind the desk which are always a delight.

Marla’s

Paragon Arcade, Hull

Over on the other side of Paragon Arcade you’ll find Marla’s and they make some of the best sandwiches in the city. Not only are they huge, they’re also packed full of great tasting, fresh ingredients. Marla’s also have a range of salads and other foods, such as sausage rolls, to complete your picnic.

Caffeinated

Trinity Market, Hull

Caffinated is another great coffee shop which you can find in Trinity Market. Like Two Gingers, they make expert level coffee with a some fantastic sweet treats behind the desk – perfect for a walk around the city centre.

Nibble

The Dock, Queen St, Hull

Nibble is a highly-rated café situated in the marina; it serves an array of delicious bites to eat, including some fantastic sandwiches. There are some traditional sandwich staples, but you can also order your own custom sandwich incorporating high-quality ingredients.

Ponti

237 Newland Ave, Hull

Ponti is an Italian coffee shop that sells, you guessed it, Italian-style sandwiches. If you’re looking for something a little different, it’s a great place to stop for a quick-eat. The shop has a Traveller’s Choice award on TripAdvisor, positive reviews and customers praise it for its welcoming atmosphere.

Thieving Harry’s

73 Humber Street, Hull

Thieving Harry’s is a trendy eatery, which won a Traveller’s Choice award on TripAdvisor. The joint offers a range of vegetarian and vegan options and is notable for its friendly atmosphere.

The Pickled Fig

Prestongate, Hessle

The Pickled Fig offers quite a unique selection of Italian sandwiches, pastries and pies. They also offer cheese and Italian meat platters or even cheese boxes.

Benedicts

42 Cottingham Road, Hull

Close by to the University of Hull, Benedicts as a staple amongst students. It’s got a crackin’ range of sandwiches, wraps and even burgers which all look amazing. Reviews are incredible… I just wish it was closer to our office.

The Artisan Coffee and Art

81 Newland Avenue, Hull

The Artisan Coffee and Art is an artistic hub nestled in Newland Avenue. The shop won a Traveller’s Choice Award on Tripadvisor and customers praise it for its warm atmosphere and quirky features. If you’re looking for a coffee with a twist and delightfully sweet and savoury eats for your picnic, then The Artisan Coffee and Art is for you.
