Best original live bands coming to Hull this Autumn

Our fair city welcomes a host of melodic live bands this Autumn, the best of which I have attempted to identify and list in this article. Now, I must confess that I am not one for live music at this moment in time because, sadly, the beast that is the cost of living crisis seems to sharpen its teeth every day, so, with that in mind, I have detailed the cost of each listing and I can report, happily, that most are relatively cheap! So, with that in mind, go forth and have a dekko as we say where I come from!

The K’s

Friday, 28th October at Bridlington Spa

Hailing from Earlestown, St Helens, the K’s are a nascent underground rock & roll success story who are coming to the Bridlington seaside on the strength of a sell-out tour where they played to 3000 people at the Manchester Albert Hall and 8000 people at Neighbourhood Festival! If this sounds like your kind of thing, you may want to listen to their debut single “Sarajevo”, which, to my mind, is a soft rock & roll number with indie tones. Pop down to the Bridlington Spa, Bridlington on Friday, 28th October at 19:30 to catch The K’s—tickets are available from £13.

The Mary Wallopers

Saturday, 29th October at Polar Bear Music Club

Bringing the sweet soul nectar that is Irish folk music to Hull is The Mary Wallopers, a Dundalk-based group that can be described as a cross between the Clancy Brothers (The Parting Glass) and John Lydon (World Destruction). Being half-Irish, Irish folk has always been a favourite of mine so I feel well placed to describe these guys as excellent having listened to their recent single “Cod Liver Oil & The Orange Juice”—might I ask that you give it a listen? Pop down to Polar Bear Music Club on Saturday, 29th October at 19:00 to catch The Mary Wallopers—tickets are available from £10.

Marty Craggs’ Little Band Jam

Saturday, 29th October at Cherry Burton Village Hall

Former Lindisfarne and Happy Cats member and veteran of the North East music scene brings his new line-up to the charming village of Cherry Burton which, happily, just so happens to be a regular haunt of Marty Craggs’ because, by all accounts, he just simply loves playing there! One can expect a suite of songs from the auld Happy Cats and Lindisfarne catalogues as well as a touch of the Irish folk (they do an excellent cover of Whiskey in the Jar—available on YouTube) and a smattering of their new music, of which I quite like “Beautiful Moment” a smooth, intimate number with some soulful instrumentals. Pop down to Cherry Burton Village Hall, Cherry Burton to catch Marty Cragg’s Little Band Jam on Saturday, 29th October at 20:00—tickets are available from £15.

Ferocious Dog

Thursday, 3rd November at The Welly Club

Ferocious Dog, a six-piece band from Nottingham, comes to our fair city with an esteemed pedigree having performed all over the UK and Europe since they formed over thirty years ago! A cross between Billy Bragg (California Stars) and The Levellers (What a Beautiful Day), they deal in a vibrant vein of Celtic-folk-infused punk rock; perhaps the best indicator of what they are about is “Psychadelic Spin” which also happens to be their most played song on Spotify. Pop down to The Welly Club on Thursday, 3rd November at 19:00 to catch Ferocious Dog—tickets are available from £22.

Bears in Trees

Friday, 4th November at Polar Bear Music Club

The latest concoction to emerge from the creative hotpot that is Croydon, Bears in Trees buck the traditional rap and grime trend, instead blending online irreverence, absurdist humour, and dedication to fostering a community into a coherent whole to produce a sound in between indie rock, punk rock, and folk punk. I advise you to listen to the superb “Ramblings of a Lunatic” to discover what I mean. Pop down to Polar Bear Music Club on Friday, 4th November at 19:30 to catch Bears in Trees—tickets are available from £15.

FONTAINES D.C.

7th November Bonus Arena

Fontaines D.C. will visit the Bonus Arena, Hull this November for their upcoming tour.

Fontaines D.C. released a second track from their highly anticipated new album Skinty Fia. “I Love You,” was met with international acclaim and joined the first single, “Jackie Down The Line,” in building widespread excitement for the band’s third album. Today, the beloved Irish band – who just took home the trophy for “Best Band In The World” at the 2022 BandLab NME Awards – released the album’s titular track “Skinty Fia,” accompanied by a music vide

KAISER CHIEFS + THE FRATELLIS + THE SHERLOCKS

8th November , Bonus Arena

One of Britain’s most treasured bands, the multi-award-winning Kaiser Chiefs have announced a nationwide arena tour for November 2022 with live favorites The Fratellis and The Sherlocks.

Formed in Leeds in 2000, Kaiser Chiefs are one of the leading bands of their generation. Fronted by the magnetic Ricky Wilson with Simon Rix on bass, Andrew ‘Whitey’ White on guitar, Nick ‘Peanut’ Baines on keyboards and drummer Vijay Mistry, the band have been Mercury nominated for their debut album, ‘Employment’ and went on to win three BRIT awards, an Ivor Novello award for Album of the Year, and havesold over 8 million albums worldwide. Kaiser Chiefs have solidly made their mark as heroes within the British music scene, with absolutely no signs of them slowing down.

Saxon

Tuesday, 22nd November at Hull City Hall

Heavy metal icons, Saxon, are, delightfully, coming to Hull next month as part of their Seize the Day UK tour where audiences have had the chance to see their brand new album Carpe Diem come to life. Having been at the forefront of heavy metal for more than four decades and with more than 15 million album sales to their names, I feel slightly redundant in my task here so I shall call it a day early and simply suggest that you give Saxon a listen if you are a member of the uninitiated. Pop down to Hull City Hall on Tuesday, 22nd November at 19:30 to catch Saxon—tickets are available from £32.50.
