Super Seaside Holiday Destinations not far from Hull

Holidays are back! The latest lift in lockdown restrictions means that all hotels and shared accommodation has reopened giving us so much more choice of where to stay. With only 12 countries available to travel to right now, it looks like the British Seaside holiday is your best chance of a family getaway this year.

With the weather getting warmer, and plenty of seaside resorts nearby to Hull, you can enjoy the fish and chips, arcades, the beach and plenty more. Here are some places for a seaside holiday within an easy driving distance of Hull, that we think you’ll love.

Bridlington

Only 40-50 minutes drive north of Hull, Bridlington is the quintessential seaside holiday resort that is perfect for all of the family. You might not think of Bridlington as a possibility for your next holiday, but it really has everything you need and who wants to spend hours driving to go have a holiday anyway? It’s also reachable by train and bus so if you’re not fortunate enough to have your own transport, you can still make it.

There’s miles of golden sandy beach where you can have a scenic walk, a paddle in the water (as long as you watch out for the groynes) or build as many sandcastles as you want to with the kids. And for a more relaxing time, you also have the option to hire a beach hut or deck chairs.

If you don’t want to spend all day at the beach, there’s also the Land Train, the Bridlington Eye, the Harbour Museum, the ‘Beside The Seaside’ Museum (which is full of waxworks), and an abundance of fish and chip and ice cream shops nearby. There’s also a really good zoo – The Bridlington Animal Park!

If it’s fun in the water you and the family love doing on holiday, East Riding Leisure Centre in Bridlington has a full length swimming pool, with a separate kids pool, splash area and water slides too which is really good fun.

For night-time entertainment, Bridlington Spa will be bringing back loads of events and shows too, while there are plenty of traditional pubs and restaurants to enjoy meals out.

For holiday accommodation, there are plenty of caravan sites, B&Bs and hotels around, many of which overlook the fabulous golden South Beach. We can recommend South Cliff Holiday Park which is run by East Riding Council. It’s decent value and in a great spot just by the beach.

Scarborough

In Scarborough, you have lots of choices as to where you’d like to spend your seaside holiday. There is Cayton Bay, which is a wonderful and dog-friendly beach, and Scarborough North Bay which has rock pools, beach huts and the remains of Scarborough Castle, a national trust site which was built in the 13th century!

Scarborough is also well known for its Sea Life Centre, which has all kinds of creatures in their aquarium from penguins to sharks! We might have The Deep in Hull, but it’s different and a good afternoon out while you’re there. For traditional holiday-style water fun, there’s the huge Alpamare Water Park with two outdoor pools, and there are open top bus rides along the sea front to enjoy.

Entertainment wise, Scarborough Spa and the Open Air Theatre have plenty of great events coming up for you to plan a holiday around. There’s a whole shopping centre and high street for any essentials you might need, along with some decent local restaurants. For those with a sweet tooth, you will definitely want to visit Len Libby Chocolates, which famously has a mouse made out of chocolate, as well so much more sweet treats.

Like Bridlington, Scarborough can easily be reached by car within an hour and 15 mins. There’s also a train directly from Hull if you’re not blessed with your own car.

Filey

Filey is home to a stunning beach, which is open all year round and dog-friendly. It is perfect for walks and is complimented for being “Beautifully clean”. Nearby, there are lots of restaurants to have a stop at.

On the beach front, there is the very famous ‘A High Tide in Short Wellies’ statue that is definitely something to keep an eye out for. For those who are fond of walking, you can also follow the Cleveland Way National Trail from Filey, and have a great coastal walk through North Yorkshire!

Skegness

About an hour and 45 mins drive away, Skegness is an ideal resort if you want to “get away” and actually experience something with some distance away from Hull. It’s one of the first traditional seaside resorts in Britain and, even today, it still has its vintage pier and promenade, which is packed full or amusements, arcades as well as a fairground and crazy golf!

If you love the traditional seaside funfair experience then you will want to go to Fantasy Island, which is full of thrilling rides and rollercoasters. Or if it’s animals you’d love to see, then Skegness is also the perfect place as they have the Skegness Aquarium, Natureland Seal Sanctuary, Orchard Farm Equestrian Centre, Radcliffe Donkey Sanctuary and Hardys Animal Farm.

For places to stay, it’s packed full of great caravan parks, hotels and B&Bs. Most notably, Skegness has one of only three Butlins in the UK which is perfect for young families. It has a fantastic indoor water park, traditional fun fair and direct access to the golden sandy beach. Even if you don’t want to stay at Butlins, you can go for the day and enjoy all the attractions for a single day pass which includes evening entertainment too!

Mablethorpe

Just north of Skegness, Mablethorpe Beach is a quieter, very beautiful area and a regular Seaside Award winner. This winter, there will be a very significant local event taking place on the beach: Motorcycle Sand Racing. There will be lots of big names in the biking world racing, so it’s definitely something to look at going to later this year.

In the meantime, there will be an assortment of pubs, cafes and amusements open this summer. On the North Promenade, there is Crazy Golf and the Dunes Central Amusement Park / Fairground to enjoy. And just a little further inland, there’s an inflatable outdoor water park.

Cleethorpes

The beach at Cleethorpes has lots of fun seaside activities such as donkey rides, paddling pools, canoeing and kayaking, and there’s also the pier which you can take a stroll down. There are beach huts that you can hire for the day and, if you’re planning on a longer stay, there are many caravan sites and hotels nearby.

Not far from the beach there’s a PAPAs Fish and Chip restaurant and on the pier is the Pavilion, which has The Victoria Tearoom restaurant and the public house, The Promenade, and there’s also live entertainments hosted there.

Whitby

Whitby is one of the greatest places to go for a seaside holiday because it is full of fantastic things to do and places to see.

There’s lots of beautiful beaches, including Robin Hoods Bay, which you can have nice walks along and are surrounded by cafes and shops to stop at. Whitby is known for its gothic attractions, such as the Dracula Experience and the Ghost Walk, which is full of history and the supernatural.

There are famous monuments such as the whalebone and Whitby Abbey. You can also climb the 199 steps from St Marys Churchyard into the Old Town, which is full of unique shops such as Whitby Glass Ltd, where you can get your own Lucky Duck. And there is so much more!
