Best Theatre coming to Hull and East Yorkshire this summer

This summer, our region, which is blessed with a number of outstanding theatrical venues, welcomes some truly exciting theatre! From the blockbuster Les Misérables to an intimate account of Arthur Duncan’s Old Mother Riley, Hull, and East Yorkshire has it all. Therefore, if you are considering the theatre in and amongst your other summer festivities, this article presents a list of the most exciting theatrical productions coming to Hull and East Yorkshire in the coming summer months.

Les Misérables at Hull New Theatre

Wed 15 June – Sat 9 July 2022

Hull audiences are set to be treated to the latest adaptation of the long-standing Les Miserables, originally a French historical novel written by Victor Hugo, this summer. Following the life of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict seeking redemption, Les Miserables is set against the backdrop of revolutionary France, a time of great social and political turmoil in nineteenth-century Europe, and features a heavy dose of love, passion, and courage.

This latest incantation, so far, can claim to have taken the stage by storm, has been hailed as “Les Mis for the 21st Century” and features a star-studded cast who have, seemingly, done a great service to a timeless piece of theatre. Les Miserables will be performed at the excellent Hull New Theatre between 15 June and 9 July, with tickets starting from £27.00 which can be purchased via the Hull New Theatre & Hull City Hall Box Office. A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Hull Truck Theatre

Enter an enchanted forest near Athens for a night of magic and mayhem as Shakespeare’s romantic comedy masterpiece is performed by members of the local community.

An argument between Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of the Fairies, has filled the forest with mischief. At the same time, four young lovers face a tangle of unrequited love and for Hermia, the threat of death if she doesn’t marry the man her father has chosen. Determined to be true to their hearts they escape into the woods, right into the hands of the fairies. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is running at Hull Truck Theatre between 2 – 9 July and tickets start from £10.00.

Walk Right Back at Hull City Hall

Walk Right Back tells the story of the legendary Everly Brothers, in particular, focusing on their rise to fame as well as their decade-long feud which precipitated their much-anticipated reunion in 1983. For those of you wondering who the Everly Brothers are, for whatever reason, they were an American rock duo, active, primarily, between the 1950s and 1970s, who produced hits such as ‘Bye Bye Love’, ‘Wake Up Little Susie’, ‘All I Have to Do is Dream’, and ‘Cathy’s Clown’. Following on the back of phenomenal sell-out tours, Walk Right Back will be performed at Hull City Hall on 9 July with tickets starting from £24.50. The Three Musketeers at Stage @The Dock

A timeless classic, everyone is familiar with Alexandre Dumas’s swashbuckling tale of the Three Musketeers. The virtuous d’Artagnon buddies up with the redoubtable trio of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis and sets out on an escapade to save the day in a politically fractured seventeenth-century France. This production of the Three Musketeers, courtesy of Morgan & West, will be a fun and family-friendly interpretation featuring only three across who have accepted the challenge of portraying fifteen characters! The Stage @The Dock is the arena of choice, a stunning multi-purpose amphitheater that being unique and ambitious is undoubtedly the perfect place in which to retell the parable of the Three Musketeers. The Play That Goes Wrong at Hull New Theatre

18 – 23 July 2022

Mischief’s multi award-winning international smash hit comedy The Play That Goes Wrong is returning to Hull.

The Cornley Drama Society are putting on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong… does! As the accident prone thesps battle on against all the odds to reach their final curtain call, hilarious results ensue! The Play That Goes Wrong is running between 18 – 23 July and tickets start from £18.50.

EVITA at Hull Truck Theatre

One of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous and popular musicals, Evita has been produced and performed on the Hull Truck stage by local theatre company, One Off Productions.

Featuring local performers, Hannah Irena Wilson and Dave Ross, this is the life story of Argentine political leader Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón with the story following Evita’s early life, rise to power, charity work, and untimely death at only 33 years old.

Evita’s memorable Don’t Cry for Me Argentina is one of the most performed musical theatre songs and the score also contains the fabulous Another Suitcase Another Hall, Oh What A Circus, High Flying Adored and You Must Love Me.

The Wizard of Oz at Bridlington Spotlight Theatre

The delightful The Wizard of Oz will, happily, be performed, with a pantomimic twist, at Bridlington’s Spotlight Theatre this summer. This interpretation of The Wizard of Oz will be a spectacular, colourful story chock-full of jokes and bundles of fun for all the family — excitingly, the audience will have a chance to meet the characters at the end of the show! An admirable venture, Spotlight theater is rather different from the other theatres in the region but no less deserving of praise. Housed in a small yet popular venue, home to the local amateur operatic and dramatic society, Spotlight will, without a doubt, sprinkle a little bit of Bridlington magic on the age-old tale of The Wizard of Oz.
