Best theatre shows coming to Hull & East Yorkshire this Spring

We’ve covered local exhibitions, and we’ve covered fantastic upcoming local gigs- now it’s the theatre’s turn!

There are a wealth of fantastic theatres and venues to be found in Hull and East Yorkshire, including the East Riding Theatre (located in Beverley), Hull Truck, and, of course, the iconic Hull New Theatre.

Naturally, Each and every one of these outstanding venues have got a busy programme of events this Spring, so, with this in mind, here is a run down of the best new theatre and musicals coming to Hull and East Yorkshire this Spring!

Hull New Theatre

The Tiger Who Came To Tea | 12 May- 14 May

First up on today’s list is ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’, the immensely popular, Olivier Award nominated smash hit show, which is showing at Hull New Theatre from the 12th of May to the 14th.

Family-friendly, engaging and full of charming sing-a-longs, this is the ideal Spring performance for all the family! Having garnered rave reviews from newspapers and the public alike- this is a must!

That’ll Be The Day | Variety Show | 15 May

Partly as a result of the enormously successful 35th Anniversary Tour, ‘That’ll Be The Day’ is back!

Featuring an immensely talented cast acting as singer, dancer and actor all in one, this is an unmissable variety show of the highest quality.

Containing everything from comedy sketches and vocal performances to dazzling displays of musicianship, this is a must for any theatre enthusiast in search of a fantastic night out!

SIX The Musical | 23 May- 28 May

Coming to Hull New Theatre this Spring is ‘SIX The Musical’- a five time Olivier Award nominated musical featuring everything from Tudor queens to pop princesses, and all things inbetween!

Concerning the six wives of Henry VIII, this innovative and unique musical is required watching for anyone with an admiration for fantastic storytelling and performing!

Titanic The Musical | 29 May- 3 June

A stunning and stirring production focusing on the lives, dreams and hopes of the Titanic’s passengers, this is sure to be a unique, impressive, and at times emotional performance, and well worth a viewing this Spring.

Featuring music and lyrics by the incomparable Maury Weston, this multi-award winning production is mandatory viewing for any local theatre fan with a hankering for something meaningful, emotional and innovative.

Hull Truck Theatre

Around the World in 80 Days | 4 May- 20 May

Coming to Hull Truck Theatre this Spring is ‘Around the World in 80 Days’, a fantastic adaptation of the Jules Verne classic, with instances of music, puppetry and circus all on display!

Engaging, stirring and not without moments of comedy, this is an outstanding performance taking place at one of the local area’s most impressive venues.

Jesus, Jane, Mother and Me | 10 May

A fantastic and twisted coming-of-age story combining black humour with heartache, this Phillip Stokes penned play explores the complexities of family dynamics, identity and the difficulties that come with being different.

SHEWOLVES | 11 May

Taking influence from Booksmart and Thelma & Louise, SHEWOLVES is an up-lifting coming-of-age comedy for teenagers and anyone who has ever been a teen!

Empowering, emotional and full of humour, this is sure to be an incredibly popular production.

Past Life | 12 May

Alice Christina-Corrigan presents Past Life, a multi-sensory exploration that concerns Kiera as she discovers and explores her past life.

A conflation of different genres, including musical and animations, this is an inventive and clever production with plenty to merit it!

Tapped | 13 May

Concerning Gavi and his attempts to motivate his local community, this is a sensitive and insightful performance displaying the difficulties of mental health and how this interacts with our family.

Modest | 23 May- 27 May

Middle Child in collaboration with Milk presents Modest, a part theatre, part music hall and drag king cabaret performance!

Written by Ellen Brammar, and with music by Rachel Barnes, Modest eschews tradition in favour of fun, engagement, and the promise of a great night out!

Fanboy | 26 May

Concerning Joe (a self confessed nerd) and his mysterious discovery, Fanboy is an affectionate love-letter to both nostalgia and pop culture.

Boasting outstanding storytelling, theatrical magic and a healthy dose of fantastic impressions, Fanboy deserves all the acclaim it has received and more!

Quality Street | 31 May- 3 June

Incorporating elements from Bridgeton and Inside The Factory, Quality Street incorporates the very best aspects of the romantic-comedy genre into a single, outstanding production!

Concerning the life of Phoebe Throssel and her romance with Captain Valentine, this is a tense and exciting production with plenty to merit it!

Mike and Millie go to the Seaside | 7 June

A local production for those living with later-stage dementia, Mike and Millie go the Seaside is full of singing, 1960’s nostalgia, engagement and fond reminisces of the past, making it an emotional yet wholesome production.

5 Years | 7 June

Taking place on the same day as Mike and Millie go the Seaside is 5 Years, a thoughtful, speculative production which looks at and questions the direction of cosmetic surgery in the coming years.

Incorporating elements of both comedy and drama, 5 Years uses a wealth of impressive, innovative digital technology, and is a must for any local fan of theatre which combines modern technology with traditional and powerful storytelling.

East Riding Theatre

Under Milk Wood | 4 May- 21 May

Dylan Thomas’s iconic and emotive play, Under Milk Wood, is coming to the East Riding Theatre this Spring!

Directed by Richard Avery, and showing from the 4th of May to the 21st, this faithful yet unique production introduces the audience to a host of unforgettable characters, all set in the Welsh village of Llarreggub!

A Tale of Two Cities | 1st June

Written by Rob Bell, this production concerns and charts the historic rivalry between Hull KR and Hull FC.

Featuring a variety of fantastic songs, this production foregrounds local culture, identity and the significance of rugby to the local area.

Two fantastic Cortona Productions are taking place on the 8th of June; Lusting for Life and The End Of The World As We Know It!
