Hull City Council leader Daren Hale is set to speak about how the city is taking action to tackle climate change locally at the COP26 climate change summit taking place in Glasgow next week.

On Tuesday November 2, Councillor Hale will be part of a panel led by Hull-based global hygiene, health and nutrition company Reckitt, discussing the ambitious plans for Hull to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The week-long event is the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will see world leaders engage in 12 days of talks, alongside tens of thousands of government representatives, businesses and citizens.

Councillor Hale said: “In April 2019, we declared a climate emergency. Last year, we published our vision for making Hull carbon neutral by 2030.

“Hull is at the forefront of tackling the climate emergency, fast becoming a leader in renewable energy, but we know there is still a lot we can do to reduce our carbon emissions.

“We have progressed key projects on district heating, electric vehicle infrastructure, modal transport shift, energy generation and business energy efficiency. Technology has continued to enable us to adapt better and continue to address our output.

“We are outlining our commitment to a net zero future and I am proud to be able to share Hull’s story at COP26.”

The Hull 2030 Carbon Neutral Strategy is built around eight themes of heat, power, mobility, consumption, fair transition, carbon sequestration, skills and jobs and innovation. It sets out the key challenges and opportunities within each theme and an initial set of actions.
