There will be an opportunity for visitors to explore the historic whiting mill on Hessle foreshore in a special free open day on Tuesday, 26 July.

The site will be open to visitors from 10.00am to 4.30pm. The building was recently refurbished as part of a Lottery funded project and is full of interesting features and information panels about the history of the site, and there is also a film about some of the characters associated with the mill.

In addition, children’s craft activities will be taking place around or inside the mill, depending on the weather.

Dr. David Marchant, museums registrar with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Come and have a go at making a toy that the children of the Victorian workers at Hessle mill would have made and played with.  You can also make a thaumatrope, a simple toy which hides an exciting optical illusion.

“Also come and explore our Hessle Mill trail.  Discover exciting facts about the whiting mill at Hessle Foreshore as you follow the trail to explore the site”.

On 26 July, in addition to the mill activities and tours, families can also have a go at the Big Butterfly Count, follow a caterpillar trail, make arty butterflies and meet Rusticus’s Barmy Butterfly in the meadow in the Humber Bridge Country Park.

Full details of the free meadow activities can be found here: https://eastridingcoastandcountryside.co.uk/whats-on/?entry=ca_kgw_butterfliesf
