The heat is dying down and it’s the perfect time for for a relaxing stroll. We’re surrounded by beautiful countryside so there are plenty of places for a scenic route. I’ve rounded up some of the prettiest places for a walk in East Yorkshire…
Flamborough Cliffs
The stunning cliffs are a beacon for migratory birds, including vast numbers of gannets, short-eared owls, great grey strikes, and several Scandinavian birds including redwing and fieldfares. In the sea, you can catch the occasional glimpse of seals, minke whale, harbour porpoise and even dolphins. The cliffs are just north of Bridlington and refreshments are available at The Seabird Centre. If you’re looking for a refreshing coastal walk, then Flamborough Cliffs are for you.
Millington Wood Nature Reserve
An ancient ash wood located in the Yorkshire Wolds, Millington Wood Nature Reserve boasts panoramic views, fascinating wildlife and a picnic area. It is best known for its carpet of bluebells in the spring, but it’s well worth a visit throughout the year. You can find the wood just north of Millington Village near Pocklington.
North Cave Wetlands
If you’re looking to walk somewhere a little different, then the enigmatic North Cave Wetlands is for you. The wetlands are a man-made nature reserve shaped by the neighbouring quarry. It incorporates a mixture of reedbeds and shallow and deep water lakes which provide a superb habitat for waders, terns, wildfowl and gulls. You can also spot red kites along the nearby hills.
Welton Dale
Welton Dale is a valley with a beautiful woodland located between two villages, Brantingham and Welton. In the winter when the foliage thins, you can get an excellent view of the Humber estuary from Brantingham. You can access both villages via the A63 and finish your scenic walk with a refreshing drink at the Triton Inn in Brantingham or the historic Green Dragon in Welton.
East Park
Hull’s largest park, East Park, makes for an excellent walk with all the extra refreshments, picnic areas, activities you could want and then some. Stroll through the intriguing Khyber Pass, gardens, parkland, over the bridge, through the animal centre and more, for a genuinely scenic local walk.
Fraisthorpe Beach
A gorgeous sandy beach near Bridlington, Fraisthorpe Beach makes for an excellent and expansive coastal walk. In addition to clean waters, and a panoramic view of the sea, you can also find old World War II defences along the coast. After your walk, and possible summer swim, be sure to stop at the Cow Shed cafe for refreshments.
Pocklington Canal
A relaxing and mostly flat walk that starts in Pocklington and finishes in East Cottingwith, the Pocklington Canal walk is around nine miles long and boasts gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. The canal ends in the Lower Derwent Valley National Nature Reserve so be sure to keep an eye out for kingfishers.
Dalby Beck
Explore Dalby Forest and enjoy a scenic walk along its beck. You can start the 3.5-mile walk at Dalby Visitor Centre before venturing into the forest and admiring the views over Dalby Dale. If you walk down into the dale, you can head towards the Ellerburn Pond to look for wildlife or join the Ellerburn Trail Walk. Make sure you enjoy a rest at the picnic area and visitor centre cafe after your walk.
Castle Howard
Several stunning trails start at Castle Howard, including a 5-mile walk past the village of Coneysthorpe. All of the Castle Howard walks include fantastic views of the castle, the farmland, The Temple of the Four Winds, The Great Lake, and the Mausoleum. Ultimately, the routes converge leading you to The Obelisk. If you’re looking for a walk with grandiose views and awe-inspiring architecture, then a walk around Castle Howard is for you.
