Polyhymns write and produce a mixture of electronic experimental music and psychedelic folk songs and have been described as ‘equally chaotic and serene’ (@B4Tapes).
The band formed in Sheffield in 2019 and comprise of Andrew Bolam, Gavin Harris and Sam Smith and all previously worked together in folktronica group Little Glitches. Their first meeting was in a local night club chill out room bonding over a shared love of Burt Bacharach and Aphex Twin. The group take inspiration from Sheffield’s landscape, from the millstone grit and ancient woodlands to the brutalist and modernist architecture.
Their first single, released in May 2020 and debut EP released in Sept 2020 both featured on the BBC Introducing Mixtape. They have received glowing reviews from Electronic Sound, Joyzine, The Organ, God is in the TV zine and garnered comparisons to Smog, Neil Young, Lemon Jelly and the Beta Band. Whilst recording they received guidance from local electronic music wizard Rob Gordon (co-founder of Warp Records) who lent them his Korg synthesiser and mastered their releases.
During the pandemic, the band sent a track on spec to Sam Genders from Tunng, who then introduced them to Mike Lindsay (Tunng, Lump) and Geoff Dolman from Static Caravan. Mike sprinkled some magic dust on the tracks, and they released the Let Them Be Animals EP in October 2021 on Static Caravan Records.
They have been remixed by acts including Loraine James, A’Bear and Pulselovers.
