Margaret Imrie
Margaret’s comprehensive history of the Hull Literary & Philosophical Society has prepared its readers for the relationship between our Society and Hull’s Museum and Art Gallery. One of the founding aims of the Society in 1822 was to ‘collect books and philosophical apparatus and to form a museum of specimens of natural history and the arts’. Whilst the progress was, for various reasons, tortuous, Margaret ‘s talk takes us through the endeavours of Hull’s professional men to educate Hull’s citizenry, and to provide the foundations for Hull’s cultural institutions.
