This June Hull Truck Theatre and the Albemarle Music Centre will open their doors for a FREE event full of activities and fun for the whole family, hosting a Family Open Day to invite audiences and local communities backstage and behind the scenes of working venues.

All ages are welcome to join in on Saturday 18 June, 11am – 4pm, for this fun day out that will be themed around environmental sustainability, where events and activities will highlight how Hull Truck Theatre is taking action to support Hull’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and to inspire visitors to think about how they can play their part by reducing their carbon footprint.

Visitors will be able to get involved in some arts and crafts on the day using recyclable materials to create items such as windmills to prompt understanding of renewable energy, face painting along environmental themes such as butterflies and trees, a dress up photobooth with props and costumes on display to show reuse and repurposing, and storytelling sessions themed to our young children’s Christmas show, Jack, Mum and the Beanstalk. There will also be a chance for children to plant seeds and take them home in pots to continue growing them at home, connecting them to the importance of plants and flowers and our responsibility to the natural world.

Award-winning local caterers ‘Shoot The Bull’ will provide delicious cakes, snacks, teas and coffees, creating the perfect environment to socialise and share this weekend day out with friends and family. If this is not all exciting enough, they are giving the first 100 visitors to enter Hull Truck Theatre a limited chip spice that celebrates our 50th year.

The Albemarle Music Centre will be putting music at the heart of their activities with performances, steelpans and hip-hop DJing. Families can try lots of instruments and join in the Big Sing.

James Dickinson, Head of Hull Music Service at The Albemarle Music Centre said:

“We are delighted that the Albemarle Music Centre Open Day is happening in partnership with Hull Truck Theatre, enabling families to enjoy and experience both venues and the opportunities that getting involved in theatre and music provides”.

At Hull Truck Theatre, we are looking forward to giving our audiences some insight into the many ways that people work within a theatre venue, to experience how a show comes to life, and to explore the areas of Hull Truck Theatre that are not always available for the public to explore.

This will be a fun opportunity to not only tour our theatre, see backstage, including the stages, dressing rooms, wardrobe, green room, rehearsal room, public spaces and more, but to also get involved in activities like a sound and lighting demonstrations providing further insight into essential roles of theatre design.

Learn how our modern and accessible building is also designed to be environmentally friendly. From the solar panels on the roof to the bore hole in the basement that pumps water from an underground spring to cool the building, you’ll learn about everything we’re doing to lower our carbon footprint.

Tom Saunders, Associate Director of Creating Learning at Hull Truck Theatre, said:

It is so exciting opening up our theatre for the day to local families, sharing backstage secrets and running creative activities. As well as being full to the brim with fun, this year’s Family Open Day is themed around environmental sustainability so all our activities will demonstrate and share our commitment to environmental sustainability at the Theatre, and hopefully inspire visitors to be more green themselves”.
