The Ferens Art Gallery is putting a call out for an artist in residence to work at the Gallery from February to May next year.

Artists are invited to apply by sending in a recent CV, a covering letter outlining their suitability for the role and images or video links of their artwork. This can be presented in video or creative format. The deadline to apply is midnight on Monday 28 November 2022.

This is only the gallery’s second residency and its first open call, with more residencies planned for later in 2023. It presents a fantastic opportunity for local artists and a new way of working for the gallery, allowing them to directly support its artist community.

The gallery is looking for a visual artist living and working in Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire or North East Lincolnshire. The artist should also have an interest in working with children and young people.

The residency space in Gallery 11 is flexible and can be used to display past work, make new work, as well as deliver talks and workshops.

This residency will support the creation of new work by the selected artist, responding to the theme of ‘identity’, which is the focus of a community exhibition planned at the Gallery from 19 March to 21 May 2023.

The successful artist will receive a fee of £10,000 to create a new work, deliver a public talk, deliver five school workshops, support young people with delivering workshops, deliver an art skills session, and have a small exhibition of past work.

Applications should be sent to ferensopen@hcandl.co.uk with the subject heading ‘ARTIST IN RESIDENCE APPLICATION’.

Shortlisted artists will be given £250 each to work up a proposal and to attend a meeting to chat through their ideas with the Ferens team on Tuesday 13 December 2022.

Claire Longrigg, Exhibitions Officer: “This is the first in a series of residencies we have planned at Ferens Art Gallery for 2023. The residencies are linked to our temporary exhibition programme at the Ferens. This one is ties in closely with an exhibition planned around the theme of identity, which the Future Ferens (young people age 18-25) and the Warren Youth Project are working on with our Community Curator and Young People’s Project Coordinator.

“We look forward to seeing how our artist in residence responds to the theme of this exhibition and animates the Gallery 11 residency space.”

Councillor Alison Collinson, Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Ltd: “The residency offers an artist a great opportunity to raise their profile and work with schools and young people.

“This is also a great opportunity for Ferens visitors to engage with and learn from a practicing artist. I encourage our local artists to consider applying.”
