5 New Films to Rent & Buy this Week

The COVID-19 rules change more often than I change my underwear (joking of course, that would be ridiculous) and with the announcement that Cineworld has closed all its cinemas until 2021 and VUE will be closing some cinemas two days each week, the film industry is in absolute turmoil.

In this article, instead of recommending 5 films to watch at your local multiplex this week, I’ve chosen 5 movies recently made available to rent or buy this week and watch from the comfort of your own home.

Scoob

One for the kids, this re-imagining of the Scooby Doo series doesn’t quite cut the mustard for adults, but it will be a pleasing diversion for children on a Saturday morning when you’re trying desperately to get some chores done. The animation is sweet and it definitely has re-watch value.

The Invisible Man

Sadly not as popular as it should have been thanks to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Invisible Man is a great film with a standout performance from Elisabeth Moss. It has some genuinely terrifying moments and is well worth a watch.

Parasite

Winner of Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, Parasite is a foreign-language film that has true mass-market appeal. For those not fans of subtitles in movies, I implore you to give it a chance, it’s truly groundbreaking and one of the best films released for a very long time.

1917

Bond director Sam Mendes created a war film with incredible cinematography and stunning performances in 1917. Another one cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it remains a highlight in a genre that is filled with memorable films.

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey

Despite the misleading title (which was later changed once people kicked off) Birds of Prey is a fun film anchored by Margot Robbie’s incredible performance as Harley Quinn. Not too original and it drags in places, but it’s colourful and a pleasing distraction from the goings on in the outside world.

There you have it, five films you are able to buy or rent this week. That should keep us all busy!
