Hull Libraries is using a fines amnesty to support local food banks and charities this Christmas.

From December 1 until January 31, anyone returning books, films and other library materials will have their library fines waived.

In return, Hull Libraries is asking users to donate food, toys and toiletries that will then be donated to local charities.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “We want to encourage people to re-engage with our library services.

“So much has changed in what we now deliver, such as the Makerspace and Business Services. A fines amnesty is a good way to encourage people back and also support local charities and the local community at the same time.”

Some people stop engaging with library services because of unreturned items and the worry of owing fines.

Hull Libraries is keen to encourage people back to the libraries and discover the resources the library service offers such as Baby Bounce, Makerspace, exhibitions and Business information.

Councillor Aneesa Akbar, portfolio holder for communities, said: “For many people, this can be a particularly difficult time of the year. By donating food, toys or toiletries to Hull Libraries, you can support local communities this Christmas.”

People do not have to donate to have their library fines waived and items can be returned anonymously.

Collection boxes for non-perishable food items, new or good condition toys and unopened toiletries will be available at the entrance to all Hull Libraries.

People who do not owe fines are still welcome to donate items.
