Freetown Way in Hull to return to two lanes following successful bid for funding

Hull City Council has recently secured government funding to transform Freetown Way, Hull back into a two-lane traffic route, equipped with safe, off-road cycle lanes.

Plans include widening the footpaths on both sides of Freetown Way, between Witham and Blundell’s Corner. This will enable the addition of segregated, off-road cycle paths, ensuring a safer environment for both pedestrians and cyclists.

To reinstate two lanes of traffic in both directions, the current cycle lanes will be removed and bollards will also be eradicated.

How Freetown Way could look under new proposals.

Cllr Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, enthusiastically confirmed the news, “For the past year, we’ve been striving to secure funding for this new cycle infrastructure, which in turn will restore two lanes of traffic on Freetown Way, Hull. I’m delighted to announce our success.”

He further emphasised the double benefits, “This is a triumph for everyone – with two lanes of traffic to maintain efficient city roads, and safe, off-road cycle paths to stimulate cycling.”

He reassured residents that their voices were being heard, “In response to last summer’s major Traffic and Transport Survey, we promised to act on residents’ feedback. We’re now honouring that promise.”

Hull City Council’s success in obtaining £8.857m from the Government Active Travel funding, facilitated by Active Travel England, will benefit several schemes in Hull. Bids were placed by the council in January 2023.

The funding will be allocated as follows:

£8.495m from ATF3 will fund two major schemes: the restoration of two lanes on Freetown Way, Hull and improvements to Preston Road.

£362,000 from ATF4 will be used for three objectives: implementing a parallel crossing on Anlaby Park Road; upgrading road cycle routes on Foredyke Stream and the Trans Pennine Trail; and developing a new off-road cycle route on Clough Road.

The council plans to procure the work shortly. Detailed design work is scheduled for the summer and autumn of this year.

Residents will have the opportunity to learn more about these changes through drop-in sessions and online updates as the designs progress. Subject to necessary approvals, the works on Freetown Way, Hull are expected to begin on-site early in 2024.
