Fun Things to Do with the Kids Around Hull & Yorkshire This October Half-term & Halloween



We’ve just snagged our first pumpkin, so you know what that means – Halloween’s just around the corner! Half term kicks off this Friday, the 27th of October, so in this month’s article we’re rounding up all the must-do events and activities for October half term and Halloween.

But wait, there’s more! We’re also giving you a sneak peek at what’s cooking for Bonfire Night. Read on!

October Half Term & Halloween Activities

Here’s the roundup of days-out ideas with Halloween themes running across the October half-term holiday…

  • Williams Den have 2 events – William’s Spooky Adventures is 28th-31st October during daylight hours, lots of Halloween fun including an interactive trick or treat street. William’s Den Halloween Nights are 27th, 28th, 31st October, 6pm till late, aimed at children age 6+ for a spookier evening experience!
  • Crafty Cat in Anlaby have lots of Halloween craft activities for all ages, and a Halloween Party. Also their play cafe is open for 0-5s.
  • Hulloween Mini Cruise to Amsterdam with P&O – sailing on the 29th October, includes 2 nights onboard in an en-suite cabin and return coach to Amsterdam, plus spooky activities and entertainment during the crossing.
  • Humble Bee Farm Pumpkin Patch & Spooky Trail near Scarborough – walk around ‘Eerie Acres’ epic haybale spooky trail, pick and carve a pumpkin and meet the farmyard animals. 18th, 21st, 22nd, 25th October then daily across half term. We went last weekend and LOVED it!
  • Northwood Trail – England’s Fairy Sanctuary at Buttercrambe Wood (near Stamford Bridge) have a lantern walk, plus Autumn grotto and storytelling, 28th October to 5th November. 
  • Piglets Pumpkin Festival runs 21st, 22nd and 28th to 31st October.
  • Boston Farm Park Halloween Shriek Week & Pumpkin Patch is open now to 31st October, plus late night specials on 28th and 29th. 
  • Coletta & Tyson Garden Centre have animal handling sessions on 31st October and 1st November.
  • Castle Howard have a Spooky Adventure on Skelf Island, plus a pumpkin patch in the garden centre and outdoor adventure cinema.
  • Stockeld Park Halloween Adventure runs 21st, 22nd October and 28th October to 5th November 2023.
  • The Big Beverley Halloween Party is Tuesday 31st October 6-8pm at Beverley Memorial Hall, from KSR Events.
  • Dalby Forest have creepy crafts, a terrifying treasure trail and a Halloween quiz. We’ve booked bikes for cycling here during half term too! 
  • Also up in the North Yorkshire Moors is the Dark Skies Fringe Festival, 27th October to 5th November, with after dark activities for families at locations across the national park. And in Whitby they are Illuminating Whitby Abbey! 21st – 31st October, 6pm-9pm. During the daytime Whitby Abbey also have spooky storytellers and creepy clues to solve in the Halloween Quest.
There are some fab looking children’s shows to watch:
  • Bat, Cackle, Pop! is a Halloween show from Story Craft Theatre, at the pop pp space on Fruit Market Hull. 28th October 2023 at 11am and 2pm, tickets £6.50.
  • Hull Truck Theatre – a Great Halloween Adventure, is an arts & crafts session followed by an interactive play, aimed at aged 3-6 years. 28th, 30th and 31st Octoberat 10am and 11.30am. Tickets just £6.50 per child with one free accompanying adult.
  • Jeddy Bear & Gary’s Chemistry of Chaos is a brand new show at Hull Truck on 4th November for age 2+, tickets £6.50. You can also catch the Hull comedy duo at the Back to Ours shows in half term and at Pocklington Arts Centre on 2nd November (more on them below).

Places to Pick a Pumpkin

There are lots of places to go out and pick your own pumpkin this year. Highlights include:

  • The Pumpkin Patch at Bewholme – open now for PYO pumpkins and pumpkin carving experiences. 
  • The Balloon Tree at Stamford Bridge has PYO pumpkins and sunflowers.
  • Butt Farm Pumpkin Patch in Beverley is open to pick your own pumpkins.
  • Thornton Abbey Maze Pumpkins – just over the Humber Bridge in Ulceby. PYO pumpkins and carving, plus play area and maize maze to explore.
  • Sandy Bottom Farm – pick your own pumpkins, sunflowers and corn on the cob, plus a Maize Maze, food vendors, games, crafts, face painting and new for 2023 – Lion Learners Animals!

Free October Half-Term Activities  

 There are some free activities and events running too –  

  • Hull Museums and Ferens Art Gallery have lots of free family craft activities inspired by mythical creatures across the half-term week.
  • Hull Training and Adult Education are running FREE family learning sessions at Freedom Centre Hull, arts and crafts with Halloween themes are throughout October (then they have Christmas crafts for November and December).
  • Fruit Market Hull have a free pumpkin trail to complete around Humber Street.
  • It’s the Nafferton Scarecrow festival!
  • Not free but almost – Water’s Edge Nature Reserve in Barton have a spooky trail (£1 per sheet).

October Half-Term Holiday Camps & Clubs

 If you need some childcare for the school holiday, here are the highlights for clubs and camps in the area:

  • Flex Dance Wonka Camps – fun dance camps at Wyke College, 1st, 2nd, 3rd November, 9am-3pm (with an 8.30am drop off option).
  • Soccer Kings Football Camps – Halloween Camps are open daily 30th October to 3rd November.
  • Fit4Fun – are back at South Hunsley with their action-packed sports camps, for ages 5-12 years, 30th and 31st October, 1st and 2nd November.
  • Ballers Football Camps – ball skills, games and activities for ages 5-12 years. 30th of October to 3rd of November, 9:30 – 1:30 (with extra-time options available through Kids Takeover).
  • Kids Takeover – fun sports, dance and activities for ages 5-12 years. 30th of October to 3rd of November, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm (with wrap-around options available from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm). At Tranby School, Hymers College, Cottingham High, Beverley RUFC and Keldmarsh Primary Beverley.

Bonfire Night!

There are some bonfires and firework displays this year, read the full guide on Mumbler here. Highlights include: 

  • Sky Magic – 4th November at Scampston and 5th November at Driffield Showground, these are huge firework displays set to music, plus live music, funfair and food stalls.
  • Sledmere – Musical Showstoppers-themed fireworks display is Saturday 28th October 2023.
