Hull business run by former KR star started in box room during lockdown

After 12 years playing professional rugby – including 10 seasons with Hull KR before retiring in 2021 after a spell with York City Knights James Green swapped the prop for property and launched Green & Green Mortgage and Protection.

The seed was planted earlier: buying his first home in 2014 left him in the dark without updates, and by 2016 he was investing in property to plan for life after rugby.

After two years working in financial services for another local firm, he set up his own business during the first Covid lockdown with one clear aim – better communication and genuine customer care.

From that box room, things moved quickly. In 2021, James took a 190 sq ft office on the ground floor at the Ergo, Bridgehead, working solo until Anna joined in 2023 to support the admin side.

Demand kept building, Charli and Chris came aboard, and in 2025 the team moved upstairs into a 700 sq ft space to keep pace.

Today, James, Anna and Charli – all Hull born and bred – work alongside Chris, who moved to Hull after meeting his wife at university, and Rhys, who advises in Cheshire from Warrington (he grew up in Wales and moved when he signed for Warrington Wolves).

What sets them apart is their obsession with service. They aim to “beat clients to the punch,” updating and signposting the next step before anyone needs to ask. The team use multiple software tools and AI to match the right lender and product to each client’s needs – because lots of advisers have access to the same lenders, but sound advice is what makes the difference.

Green & Green advise across residential and buy-to-let – first purchases, home moves and remortgages – including releasing equity for home improvements, consolidating debt, or funding investments.

They also offer tailored protection advice (life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection). Over the years they’ve created a library of free guides to help people get moved in faster.

If you’re planning to buy your first home in 2026, download their free First-Time Buyers Guide on the Green & Green website. And if you’ve got a mortgage already, book a free Mortgage MOT to see if you could save money.

It’s a proper local success story – from a lockdown box room to a trusted team at the Ergo, serving Hull, East Yorkshire and beyond. You can find their website here, and they’re on socials too – Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok.
