Hull City Council are encouraging residents to have their say on two major developments in the city. The A63 Castle Street scheme, aiming to create a better traffic flow through the city centre; as well as the Hull Old Town area.
A63 Castle Street Upgrade
Members of the public can go online and have their say on a major upgrade that will transform Hull.
The A63 Castle Street scheme will create a much better connection between the city centre and the retail and docks area. This will support the city’s economic growth, improving journeys to and from the centre, and will help the Port of Hull to thrive.
Highways England is hosting a public information webinar, offering the chance to discuss these improvements. The event, which takes place on Monday 1 March at 5pm, is a chance to get an update and ask the project team questions.
Highways England project manager Bernice Beckley said: “We look forward to providing an update on the good progress we are making with the A63 Castle Street scheme. This is a great opportunity for us to listen to people’s views and answer their questions.”
The major project will see the introduction of a new junction by lowering the level of the A63 at the Mytongate junction. Ferensway and Commercial Road will cross the A63, creating a split-level junction.
The eastbound carriageway between Princes Dock Street and Market Place will be widened to three lanes, and a new bridge built over the A63 at Porter Street. The city’s new bridge, Murdoch’s Connection, will also open soon.

Hull Old Town
Alongside the A63, the public are also invited to share their views on the future of Hull’s Old Town.
The historic area, home to Hull Minster, Trinity Square, the cobbled High Street and Beverley Gate, is a much-loved area of the city for both residents and visitors.
The picturesque and unique area has recently been used as the backdrops for films such as Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield.
Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for regeneration and economic investment, said: “We want to hear from people so that, together, we can continue to develop, regenerate and improve the Old Town.
“We’ve seen huge investment in the area in recent years, which has resulted in the arrival of many fantastic new businesses and modern, attractive accommodation. We are currently working on regenerating Whitefriargate, with millions of pounds of investment already secured from Historic England and the Humber LEP.
“The area has really become a place where people want to live, work and play – and it’s only going to get better.”
Hull City Council is seeking views and comments on two documents, a draft and updated conservation area character appraisal and a draft conservation area management plan. The public have until 9 March 2021 to register their comments.

The Old Town has undergone significant change in the last 15-20 years and that process of positive change is ongoing. The production of a new amalgamated character appraisal and separate management plan will assist in managing and protecting the special architectural and historic interest of the Old Town, in addition to supporting new funding initiatives for the revitalization of Whitefriargate and Silver Street.
