If you’re anything like me, you probably over did it a little bit at Christmas this year. And that’s perfectly fine. It’s exactly what Christmas is all about. Especially after this last year!

January is often a time for people to say ‘new year, new me’ which usually means healthy eating for a couple of months and then back to business as usual by March. I am speaking from experience of course.

But just because you’re eating healthier this January doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a takeaway. Especially in Hull & East Yorkshire where we have some amazing, health conscious eateries to keep your hunger at bay.

The Healthiest Takeaways in Hull & East Yorkshire

Hull & East Yorkshire are blessed to have many health conscious eateries across the region, serving up lean food at your continence. However due to COVID-19, a lot of them are unfortunly shut. Here are some of those that are still open.

J-Jays

J-Jays are all for fuelling the people of Hull. They know that we live busy lives and sometimes we can often forget our health. During busy weeks we have become heavily reliant on fast food which can often be unhealthy and lacking in nutrition.

J-Jays have solved this by offering a full range of fresh, healthy food and drinks ready for eating and drinking. They have 12 different prepared meals from Chicken Satay to Turkey Bolognese, with 12 different ‘mini-meals’ for those who want fulfilling meals that offer portion control and help keep your hunger satisfied throughout the day.

They also have a couple of wraps, breakfast options, and clean cakes which offers the guilty indulgent feeling but contain healthier, more natural ingredients.

How to Make Your Usual Takeaway Healthier

Takeaways are god send sometimes, especially when you cannot be bothered to cook. They’re cheap, convenient and satisfying. But unfortunately they’re mostly pretty bad for you. But in moderation, that’s not always a bad thing. Most diets include a slot for a weekly or bi-weekly cheat meal so you can purge your inner cravings. A cheeky takeaway can often be a nice way to take a break from the hell that is your January diet.

Making your usual takeaway a slightly healthier affair is pretty simple. Some takeaways and restaurants across the country list calories and macros on their menus which can help you make a healthier, more informed choice. Making slight changes to your usual order can make all the difference.

Chippy

At a Fish & Chip shop try to include a portion of baked beans or mushy peas, and watch out for foods that are high in fat, such as pies and sausages. The NHS suggest not to eat all the batter around your fish as it soaks up a lot fat, ask your local chippy if they could coat your fish in breadcrumbs.

Pizza

If Italian is your thing then try to avoid large deep-pan pizzas with cheese-stuffed crusts and try a pizza with a thinner base with vegetables/lean meat toppings.

Chinese & Thai

Anything marked as “crispy” at a Chinese or a Thai takeaway means it’s deep-fried, plus starters such as prawn crackers and spring rolls are also deep-fried. Also anything in batter will be high in fat. Steamed dishes are the best options at Chinese/Thai takeaways but you could also consider stir-fried dishes as they’re usually lower in fat and include vegetables. Curries are often made with coconut milk which is high in saturated fat.

Indian

For an Indian takeaway you want to avoid anything that is creamy or deep-fried. Seek dishes that are tomato-based such as jalfrezi and madras. Vegetables and lentils are your friends at an Indian takeaway, alongside tandoori-cooked meat.

Kebabs

Doner kebabs can be high in fat. For a healthier option, try a shish kebab, which is a skewer with whole cuts of meat and is usually grilled. If you’re gong for a burger, seek out grilled burgers made from lean fish or meat without cheese and mayonnaise.
