Work to improve cycle routes will begin in Hessle Road between Brighton Street and Priory Park roundabout from today.

Following a six week consultation period, members of the public were asked to share their views on plans to improve cycling in Hessle Road.

This feedback has helped inform the improvement plans for cycling along Hessle Road, and a number of the suggestions received have been incorporated into the revised scheme.

The work involves improving existing cycle lane infrastructure between Brighton Street and Priory Park roundabout.

The proposed scheme will also incorporate wider cycle lanes and introduce flexible bollards in some sections of the road, to provide physical segregation between cyclists and moving traffic.

Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment, regeneration and planning, said: “Despite these further lockdown measures, we are continuing with our plans to install safer cycling routes in Hessle Road to ensure that we can keep cyclists safe, and encourage people to use a more sustainable form of transport.

“Cycling is not only good for your personal health and wellbeing, but also impacts positively on the environment by reducing the number of cars on the road.

“We hope that this will encourage more people to get out and use their bikes as a form of the permitted exercise, as we move towards transforming the way in which people travel in and around the city.”

The work is being carried out by Ashcourt and is expected to last six weeks.
