Historic Grade II listed Hull building to become apartments

A Grade II listed former Hull hospital has attracted ‘significant interest’ from potential investors after being placed on the market last month, offering an opportunity to redevelop it into a modern city living complex.

Victoria House, in Park Street, stands in a 1.8-acre site near the rear entrance to the St Stephen’s shopping centre.

It has planning permission for existing buildings to be converted into 60 apartments, and the construction of a new-build three to five storey complex of 68 apartments.

The former hospital site, which dates back to 1890, holds a significant place in Hull’s history as it was where the city’s first female GP Dr Mary Murdoch – who was recently commemorated in the naming of the new footbridge over Castle Street in the city centre – worked as a house surgeon.

The site was sold by its former owners the Humber NHS Foundation Trust two years ago to an investor who secured planning permission from Hull City Council for its redevelopment.

Building expected to ‘command good price and not be on market long’

Garness Jones are now handling the sale, and Agency Director Paul White says he has been delighted with the initial interest generated.

“Victoria House holds a huge amount of local history and it presents a fantastic opportunity for a residential developer to give it a bright new future through converting it into 128 new apartments,” he said.

“As a historic Grade II listed building with planning permission for both conversion and new build elements, it is the exact type of building which is currently in high demand from investors.

“It has history, is a beautiful building both externally and internally, and is in a great location close to the city centre.

“The significant interest we have received since the property went onto the market just a couple of weeks ago gives us confidence it will command a good price and hopefully not remain on the market long.

“We’ve already had strong expressions of interest both regionally and from out of town investors experienced in residential conversions.”
