Hull & East Yorkshire’s most historic pubs and the story behind them

Hull is a place of so much history and culture, there’s really no surprise that so many of the buildings are centuries old! Plus, there are some places where you can be transported in time whilst eating and drinking. Here are Hull and East Riding’s most historic pubs for you to enjoy…

Ye Olde White Hart

Silver Street, Hull City Centre

Although it was destined to be King’s property, the Ye Olde White Hart and the building has been completely untouched- it has even survived fire in the 19th century! Now, it has kept all of its charms and has two well stocked bars, a large selection of malt whiskeys and a large beer garden! You can also see the famous skull, which is proudly on display.

The Sun Inn

Flemingate, Beverley

Opposite the Beverley Minster, The Sun Inn was built in 1530 and it is believed to be the oldest pub in all of Beverley! This is the best place to go for its huge array of drinks, excellent meals (including the classic Sunday lunch) and it is also Beverley’s premier music venue. Humber Dock Tavern

Hull Marina

Opened in 1806, this pub was originally named New Dock Tavern. However, because of the distinctive green bricks, it was known for decades as Green Bricks, until its more recent name change. You can enjoy your meal and drinks with a view overlooking the docks, and they also show all major sporting games.

The White Horse Inn

22 Hengate, Beverley

This is the second oldest surviving tavern in Beverley, and it was previously known as Nellies. The building was first used as a coaching inn and it dates back to before 1666! Even though its been a pub for a long time, it still keeps its original features and an old-school interior. You can enjoy tasty beer and quizzes in a pub that will make you feel like you’ve been taken back in time.

Ye Olde Black Boy

150 High Street, Hull

In the heart of Old Town is Hull’s most historic pub, as it was built in 1336 and licenced in 1729. Ye Olde Black Boy has witnessed some crucial parts of history, and is only round the corner from William Wilberforce’s house. You can sit by the open fire and enjoy a drink, with choice from the draught and hand-pull beers and ciders, and over 100 bottle of spirits.

The George Hotel

The Land of Green Ginger, Hull City Centre

The George Hotel is best known for having the smallest window in all of England! As well as that, it was built in the 71th century and the panelled interior definitely reflects that. They show live sport events every day, which you enjoy with their huge collection of cask ales.

The Manchester Arms

7 Scale Lane, Hull

Standing next to the oldest building in Hull, The Manchester Arms has its own place in history. It was established in 1791 and has had various names (such as The Blade Bone, The Slaw Bone and The Earl Grey) before finally settling on ita current name in 1876. This name comes directly from HMS Manchester, which was the first ship to enter Hull’s first ever dock.

The Green Dragon

Cowgate, Welton

This pub and inn is set in a refurbished 17th century coaching inn, and was also visited by one of East Riding’s most infamous names. Dick Turpin was a notorious highwayman and thief from 300 years ago, who wreaked havok from Essex to Yorkshire. Under the name of John Palmer, he stayed at the Green Dragon, where he was arrested by local magistrates.
