Hull bloke behind Sober Socials shares 3 top alcohol-free hangouts

For years, Henry Beercock was what he calls a classic binge drinker – big nights out, hangovers, and doing it all again the next week. But after twenty years, he took a short break from drinking on a fitness retreat in Thailand, and ended up changing his life completely.

He realised Hull didn’t have many spaces for people who were sober or just curious about taking a break from alcohol, so he started AlcoHull Free – and now it’s a growing community that brings people together for Sober Socials. These are meetup events without the pressure to drink, hosted at brilliant local venues that really embrace the alcohol-free movement.

Dive, 59 Princes Ave, Hull HU5 3QY

Dive on Princes Avenue is a go-to for AlcoHull Free socials, a coffee bar by day and a vibrant hangout by night. With neon lights, great music, and New York–style pizza by the slice, it’s a banging spot for a sober hangout.

The Sailmakers Arms, 159 High St, Hull HU1 1NQ

Over in the Old Town, The Sailmakers Arms is warm, full of character, and serves great home-cooked food. With 0% beers, AF G&Ts and sparkling sodas on their line-up, there’s plenty of alcohol-free options to enjoy. Between that and the open fires, live music, and friendly staff, it’s a top spot.

Hours:

  • Monday 12–11 pm
  • Tuesday 12–11 pm
  • Wednesday 12–11 pm
  • Thursday 12–11 pm
  • Friday 12–11 pm

The Boardroom at Taphouse, 20 Pier St, Hull HU1 1ZA

And down Humber Street, The Boardroom at Taphouse is one of the most popular alcohol-free hangouts in Hull. It’s packed with shuffleboard tables, virtual darts, and plenty of laughs – all fuelled by good company rather than booze. They even serve alcohol-free 1664 on tap, poured just like a pint should be. You can also get more alcohol-free options by the bottle, such as Erdinger, which comes with a cool glass too.

Hours:

  • Monday Closed
  • Tuesday Closed
  • Wednesday 12–11 pm
  • Thursday 12–11 pm
  • Friday 12–11 pm
  • Saturday 12–11 pm

So if you’re looking for social, welcoming places to enjoy a night out without the alcohol, these might be just what you’re after. Also, all three venues have alcohol-free beer on draft – which is a very rare thing!
