Hull city centre shopping arcade returns to full capacity after new and reopenings

A Victorian arcade in Hull city centre has reached full capacity again thanks to new tenants and the reopening of The Hispanist restaurant.

Stretch Pizza is the latest addition to the food scene at Hull’s Paragon Arcade, joining five other food outlets offering a variety of cuisines. Four retailers sell music, memorabilia, jewellery, babywear, and flowers, while four service businesses cater to hair, beauty, aesthetics, and tattoos.

Allenby replaced businesses that moved out during the last year and offered workspaces at Paragon Studios for those not needing a shop window.

Jason Nichols at Stretch Pizza

Stretch Pizza is the largest new arrival, run by husband and wife team Jason and Tash Nichols. They have a 40-seat restaurant and previously gained experience at markets, festivals, weddings, and Hull Street Food Nights. Their team has nine members, with more potentially joining for summer outdoor events.

Nick Hill at The Hispanist

The Hispanist, which won the Best in Food and Drink category at this year’s HullBID Awards, reopened after closing to reduce energy costs and revamp operations.

Other new additions include Dewy, a smoothie and healthy food outlet, and Salt and Pepper Club, which offers Chinese street food. Existing business, Milchig, has expanded its space for customers to enjoy its locally roasted coffee and unique sandwiches, grilled cheeses and bagels.

Oishii Ne, offering Asian flavours, opened last summer and complements the Chinese street food served by Salt and Pepper Club.

Ashlee Spyvee opened the babywear shop Mya Rose, which focuses on providing high-quality, unique clothing at affordable prices and was inspired by her own difficulty finding suitable clothes.

Lucy Thompson and Allie Harrod opened Allie & Wade Studios, providing hair, beauty, and aesthetics services, after previously renting chairs in another business. They now plan to add a lash technician to their team in April, as their hair, beauty, and aesthetics services continue to grow in popularity.

Christina Tsitlakidou and mum Rania Besleme at Dewy

Rania Besleme and her daughter Christina Tsitlakidou opened Dewy, the healthy food and smoothie outlet, after waiting for a unit to become available for over two years. Christina highlighted the appealing appearance of the arcade and the friendly relationships between business owners as reasons for choosing the location.

In addition to the wide range of food, retail, and service offerings, Paragon Arcade is planning to resume its events programme to further support and promote its local businesses. The arcade’s diverse mix of businesses and community atmosphere has become a major draw for both local residents and visitors from outside Hull.

Georgia Allenby, Design and Marketing Manager for Allenby Commercial, the Arcade’s owners, highlighted the diverse mix of locally-owned businesses.

“It’s great to see Paragon Arcade full again with vibrant new businesses all locally owned and offering something completely different. We have always tried to create a really good mix and that’s what we have.”

Overall, the revitalization of Hull’s Paragon Arcade demonstrates the potential for success when businesses come together to create a diverse, community-driven environment. The arcade’s full capacity and the enthusiasm of its tenants bode well for its future as a thriving destination for shopping, dining, and services in the heart of Hull.
