Landmarks across Hull city centre will be bathed in purple light on Thursday to honour and remember victims of the Holocaust.

From dusk (approximately 4.30pm) on Thursday January 27, Hull City Council will be lighting up the following buildings and structures, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day:

  • Ferens Art Gallery
  • Hull City Hall
  • Hull Minster
  • The Guildhall
  • The Wilberforce Monument
  • Solar Gate (Queen’s Gardens)
  • Murdoch’s Connection footbridge (over A63 Castle Street)

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27 January each year to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Councillor Lynn Petrini, Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull, said: “It is so important that we mark Holocaust Memorial Day, to ensure the lessons of the past are not forgotten.

“On Thursday, we will join cities across the UK in an act of solidarity as we light up some of our most prominent landmarks.

“We encourage people across the city to join us and ‘light the darkness’ to remember the atrocities of history and challenge the hatred and persecution that still exists in the world.”

People are also encouraged to attend the online Holocaust Memorial Day service and light candles in their windows to help “light the darkness”.

The UK Ceremony for Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 will be streamed online on Thursday 27 January from 7pm-8pm.  At 8pm, households across the UK will be invited to light candles and put them in their windows (if able to do so safely) to remember those killed in the Holocaust and to stand against prejudice and hatred today.
