Hull City Council’s Cabinet will discuss proposals later this month to further develop the Hull District Heating Project by incorporating the Albert Avenue Pools into the heat network. This project, approved in March 2022, aims to provide heating and hot water to public and private businesses and residential accommodations in the city centre at a lower cost than other low-carbon heating solutions. By utilizing a single central boiler, the project is estimated to save over 2,000 tons of CO2 annually.
On Monday 27 March, the Cabinet will hear proposals for expanding the heat network to include the west Hull facility. Albert Avenue Pools, which has recently undergone extensive refurbishment, is set to reopen this summer. The proposed expansion seeks to reduce exposure to ongoing and future energy price volatility by integrating the pools into the Hull District Heat Network plans.
By moving forward with this proposal, the council aims to decrease energy costs, enhance energy security, and reduce carbon emissions. This will support the Council Carbon Neutral 2030 targets, Carbon Neutral Policy, the Oh Yes! Net Zero campaign, and align with the Green Heat Network Fund campaign.
Cllr Julia Conner, portfolio holder for environment and climate change lead at Hull City Council, expressed concerns about rising energy and heating costs and their financial impact on the council and residents. She added, “The proposal to implement a District Heating Network for Albert Avenue baths is a sensible step to help bring down the costs and does so in an environmentally friendly way.”
