Hull City Council considers expansion of District Heating Project to incorporate Albert Avenue Pools

Hull City Council’s Cabinet will discuss proposals later this month to further develop the Hull District Heating Project by incorporating the Albert Avenue Pools into the heat network. This project, approved in March 2022, aims to provide heating and hot water to public and private businesses and residential accommodations in the city centre at a lower cost than other low-carbon heating solutions. By utilizing a single central boiler, the project is estimated to save over 2,000 tons of CO2 annually.

On Monday 27 March, the Cabinet will hear proposals for expanding the heat network to include the west Hull facility. Albert Avenue Pools, which has recently undergone extensive refurbishment, is set to reopen this summer. The proposed expansion seeks to reduce exposure to ongoing and future energy price volatility by integrating the pools into the Hull District Heat Network plans.

By moving forward with this proposal, the council aims to decrease energy costs, enhance energy security, and reduce carbon emissions. This will support the Council Carbon Neutral 2030 targets, Carbon Neutral Policy, the Oh Yes! Net Zero campaign, and align with the Green Heat Network Fund campaign.

Cllr Julia Conner, portfolio holder for environment and climate change lead at Hull City Council, expressed concerns about rising energy and heating costs and their financial impact on the council and residents. She added, “The proposal to implement a District Heating Network for Albert Avenue baths is a sensible step to help bring down the costs and does so in an environmentally friendly way.”

As the Hull District Heating Project continues to develop, the integration of Albert Avenue Pools into the network will serve as a prime example of the project’s potential benefits. The council’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions will be showcased through this expansion, demonstrating a proactive approach to tackling the challenges of climate change and energy security.

Should the Cabinet approve the proposal, further planning and implementation will commence, ensuring that the benefits of the District Heating Network can be fully realized at Albert Avenue Pools. This will not only contribute to the financial stability of the facility but also promote environmentally friendly practices in the community.

In the future, the Hull District Heating Project may inspire other cities to adopt similar strategies, using district heating networks to lower energy costs, improve energy security, and reduce carbon emissions. By investing in sustainable solutions, communities can work together to combat climate change, support local economies, and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Overall, the expansion of the Hull District Heating Project to include the Albert Avenue Pools is a promising opportunity for the city and its residents. The project’s success in reducing costs and carbon emissions will serve as a testament to the council’s dedication to a sustainable future and may encourage other communities to follow suit.
