Hull City Council to mark Commonwealth Day 2023

Commonwealth Day 2023 will be marked in Hull next Monday (13 March) as a flag is raised at the Guildhall.

The day marks the ten year anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the Commonwealth, will all 76 UK cities raising the Commonwealth of Nations Flag of Peace at 11am.

Members of the public are invited to the ceremony that will see the flag blessed by the Lord Mayor’s Chaplin Canon Paul Greenwell, before being raised by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Christine Randall.

A bulger, piper and town crier will also take part in the ceremony.

Lord Mayor said:

“Marking Commonwealth Day in this way symbolises the city and country’s commitment to the shared values and principles of the Commonwealth.

“2023’s theme of ‘forging a sustainable and peaceful common future’ supports the promotion of peace, prosperity and sustainability, especially through climate action, which is something the council is committed to continually improve for its residents.

“I hope to see residents joining us at the Peace Gardens to mark this occasion.”

Commonwealth Day 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter, by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 11 March 2013.

This will be the first Commonwealth Day presided over by His Majesty King Charles III as King and Head of the Commonwealth.

The day marks the beginning of week-long series of events and activities happening across the world.
