Hull College students create tribute mural to Hull’s fishing heritage

Talented art students have created a mural and poignant tribute to Hull’s fishing heritage.

Under the supervision of local artist Andy Pea, the students painted a homage to the leading powerhouses of the Headscarf Revolutionaries who, in the 1960s, campaigned for safety reforms for the Hull fishing fleet.

The artwork features Lillian Bilocca, Christine Jensen, Mary Denness, and Yvonne Blenkinsop and is painted on the Maurice Rawlings Community Centre. The work was revealed at an opening event attended by former trawlermen, local historians, and prominent politicians including West Hull MP Emma Hardy, and councillor Darren Hale. Members of the public too were invited to witness the unveiling of the mural and to meet the artists at the event on Thursday, June 13.

Hull College lecturer Sarah Rounding said: “The college is always eager to engage with the community and our art students were so keen to contribute to keeping alive the city’s links with its fishing heritage. This beautiful mural is not only a tribute to the headscarf revolutionaries but also to all the trawlermen who risked their lives at sea and to those who never returned.”

Reproductions of the murals will grace the walls of the college’s renowned Art Institute building and further strengthens the college’s ties to the fishing industry and local community. Bilocca, the college’s training restaurant named after Lillian, will soon be open to the public and hopes to host a very special guest in Virginia McKenzie, Lilian’s daughter when she visits from New Zealand.
