Hull Guildhall event to give unique insight into careers for Women in manufacturing & engineering

An event in Hull this October will give women and girls a unique insight into careers in manufacturing and engineering – highlighting different pathways they can take into a rewarding new career.

The Women into Manufacturing and Engineering Hull Careers Event 2023 takes place at the Guildhall in Hull on Wednesday 4th October from 4.30pm – 6pm.

At this event, over 30 of the region’s top companies will be attending – with female employees on hand to answer and questions women might have about careers in industry, as well as details of what you’ll need to succeed. Many even have apprenticeships, traineeships and vacancies currently available to apply for.

The event is for women with all different kinds of backgrounds – from young women just starting to consider their futures, to those already working, either looking for a new challenge, or coming back to work after a break. We also want to engage with parents/carers, as we recognise that they want and need to understand these opportunities too.

And there are also lots of sectors represented at the event – including manufacturing, engineering, renewables, digital, energy, transport, food and healthcare.  Many of the companies present are also heavily involved in getting our region to NetZero.

Dr Kirsty Clode, Chair of WiME, said: “Since our live career events returned last year, we’ve really enjoyed meeting hundreds of women and girls from across the Humber, from all walks of life, to show them the range of careers on offer, and we’ve hopefully challenged some misconceptions too.

“Though there are lots of hands-on roles for women available in the engineering and manufacturing industries, there are also lots of office-based roles and roles where strong digital, analytical and organisational skills are needed – we want women to know it’s not just about hard hats and hi-vis.

“If this sounds like it could be of interest, please come down and have a chat with our companies – the women who work for them will be able to give you a first-hand account of working in industry – and what they have to say might just surprise you.”

Maria Gillum, Senior Design Engineer at Ideal Heating, said: “At Ideal Heating, we believe in empowering people to grow and excel in their roles, by providing them with the necessary support and training. As an Engineering Apprentice, I have experienced this first-hand, and I also understand the value of having women as role models in these fields.

“We want to inspire the next generation to explore their potential and make a positive impact. They may or may not choose this path, but they should at least have the opportunity to discover it for themselves.”

Cllr Linda Tock, portfolio holder for Hull Training at Hull City Council, said: “This is a great opportunity for women and girls in Hull to learn about the employment opportunities in our city.

“The council is keen to help them on their journey in any way it can and I am delighted that we are able to support this event.”
