Litterbugs in Hull have been ordered to pay more than £20,000 this month.

After failing to pay fixed penalties for littering, 46 people appeared before magistrates on March 15 and were ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £20,864.

They each received a criminal record for the littering offences, which took place last year in various locations across Hull including streets in the city centre, holderness road, the avenues and Boulevard.

Keep Britain Tidy says more than two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day, which is an estimated street cleaning cost to the taxpayers of more than £1billion a year.

Littering offences can result in a £100 fixed penalty, reduced to £80 if paid within the early-payment period, or prosecution and a maximum fine of £2,500.

Anyone issued with a fixed penalty notice for littering in Hull should pay it promptly by calling the council’s enforcement contractor, LA Support Limited, on 0800 781 6229 or visiting https://fpnpayment.com/Hull.

A Hull City Council spokesperson said: “We urge everyone in Hull to dispose of their rubbish responsibly by putting it in a bin or taking it home with them.”
