Hull maritime training course extended for additional year

An accredited training programme created by Hull Maritime and designed to support young people enter the maritime sector has received further financial support to extend the course for an additional year.

Thanks to funding from Trinity House Maritime Charity and Hull City Council’s Adult Training, 40 additional people from the region can gain the ‘Maritime Futures’ qualification and skills they need to kickstart their career.

Now, the search is underway to appoint a contractor to deliver the accredited training course for the forthcoming year.

In 2021, Hull Maritime joined forces with East Coast Maritime Training to deliver ‘Maritime Futures’, a three-week intensive course designed to support people who are looking to enter a career at sea and develop the rights skills to succeed. Since starting, 102 participants have completed one of the ten courses, with 80% of those securing employment in the maritime sector because of completing the course.

Young people complete a number of elements to pass the course.

This vocational training also offers first-hand knowledge from former trawlermen offering young people a real insight to working in these industries.

Gillian Osgerby, Hull City Council’s Programme Director for Hull Maritime, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, Hull Maritime has provided a vast array of opportunities to enable residents improve skills, build confidence and gain qualifications and Maritime Futures is one of them.

“This is just one of success stories of this project and we are delighted to have secured additional funding from Trinity House London and Hull City Council’s Adult Training to enable more young people achieve their goals and set sail on a career at sea.”

As part of the funding there will be four additional courses, the first one will get underway in the summer.
