Hull residents are urged to Step it Up ahead of national Recycle Week, beginning 20th September.

Hull City Council is joining forces with the national recycling campaign, highlighting how everyone can help tackle the climate crisis through simple daily activities. Such as recycling more of the right things more often.

Councillor Rosie Nicola, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services said:

“Our city has strong green credentials and Hull is already a top-performing city when it comes to recycling, but we can all do more to play our part in fighting climate change. Small but powerful habits like recycling more of the right things more often can really make a difference to the environment. As a Council we are committed to reducing climate change and have an ambitious target to be carbon neutral by 2030. As such we are an enthusiastic supporter of Recycle Week and urge the city’s residents, businesses and organisations to join in the initiative and Step it Up for recycling.”

A pledge tree and large footprint pledge board will be on display at three sites across the city throughout the week for residents to visit and display their personal climate change promise. The pledge tree and footprints will be at the Guildhall (20th to 21st September); the Central Library (22nd to 23rd September) and finally at Hull Minster (24th to 25th September).

Recycle Week is a national campaign led by sustainability NGO WRAP (The Waste and Resources Action Programme). The campaign, which is now in its 18th year, galvanises the public to play their part in fighting the climate crisis by carrying out small daily activities that can make a big difference. Hull City Council’s recommended top five recycling tips that residents can easily do to help reduce climate change are

  • dispose of batteries at local battery disposal centres, not in your wheelie bins
  • place used nappies in black – not blue – bins so as not to contaminate recyclables
  • place all food waste in your caddy or brown bin
  • recycle waste at Hull Household Recycling Centres
  • do not place bagged waste in blue bins.
