Hull Truck Theatre, together with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), are on the lookout for local playwriting talent… and the best part? Anyone is eligible to take part.

They are encouraging, supporting and facilitating local people of all ages and abilities to write a play which will be considered for inclusion in an exciting new project taking place in 2023.

2023 will mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s First Folio, which is the first time his 37 plays were brought together in one book.

The RSC is marking this anniversary by working with a number of RSC Partner Theatres up and down the country to select and celebrate a brand-new series of 37 plays that reflect the world in which we live today.

Hull Truck Theatre have been delivering free workshops across the city to help people get started on their playwriting journey. Offering advice to anyone hoping to submit a play when the project opens in January, they have visited schools, colleges and community groups and continue to facilitate two evening writers’ sessions for people aged 14-18 and 18-30, which will run until the end of term.

In addition, over the course of December and January, the theatre will run a series of three bootcamp sessions from their home on Ferensway.

These sessions are aimed at local people and budding writers who may require support and guidance ahead of the submission deadline.

To register your interest in attending these bootcamp sessions, or to find out more about the project in general, please visit: https://www.hulltruck.co.uk/get-involved/37-plays/ and fill in the expression of interest form: https://forms.office.com/r/Eyv3Vn5ris.

Kerrie L Marsh, Playwrighting Officer at Hull Truck Theatre:

“This is such a fantastic and unique project and we’re delighted to be involved. The beauty of 37 Plays is that it’s open to absolutely anyone and everyone.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are, or what your writing ability is like, we just want to encourage you to harness your storytelling power and write a play that reflects an aspect of your world… whether that’s life at school, the cost-of-living crisis or something more light-hearted altogether… no subjects are out of bounds. Your play could be one page long, or 10 pages long – the brief is wide open!

“We hope that our free writing bootcamp sessions over the next couple of months will provide the people of our city with a forum so they can discuss their ideas, hone their craft and receive feedback from a critical friend, before submitting their final plays in January.”

The window for submissions for the 37 Plays project opens on 1st January and closes on 31st January 2023.

Submissions must be made via the dedicated website: https://www.37plays.co.uk/.

Applicants will be advised on the outcome by March/ April 2023.

If you are a school or group in Hull and would be interested in booking a free workshop session to develop your writing skills before the end of term, please contact Kerrie L Marsh via engagement@hulltruck.co.uk
