A trio of shows including a rescheduled performance by singer songwriter Eliza Carthy MBE have been announced by Hull Truck Theatre ahead of its Autumn programme, kicking off on Friday 27th August. As well as the renowned folk artist, Hull’s fifteenth annual Freedom Festival will return to the theatre with shows from multi-award winning Sh!t Theatre and an endearing and funny kids’ show from Daryl Beeton productions.

Yorkshire born folk artist Eliza Carthy, who has been twice nominated for the coveted Mercury Prize and was awarded the honour of an MBE for services to folk music in 2014, will be joined by her live band at Hull Truck Theatre on Tuesday 7 September. They will perform material from ‘Restitute’, the album recorded at Eliza’s home in picturesque Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire, as well as songs from the forthcoming album ‘Northern Glowerhouse presents Through that Sound my Secret was Made Known’.

Improvisation aficionados Sh!t Theatre, based in Suffolk, will be bringing their chaotically funny show ‘Drink Rum With Expats’, which won a Fringe First, a Lustrum Award and the Holden Street Theatre Edinburgh Award, to Hull. Celebrating their final year as Europeans, island-monkeys Becca and Louise got invited to the 2018 European Capital of Culture in Malta, having missed out on Hull 2017, where they went to drink rum with Brits abroad but found a lot more than they expected. The duo were commissioned to make a show to be performed, just once, in a pub in Malta, which resulted in ‘Drink Rum With Expats’ – a true story about mystery and murder in the fight to be European.

Completing the trio is ‘A Square World’; an honest, touching and quirky story of three friends and what happens when an unexpected change leaves one of them left out in the cold. Aimed at 3 – 6 year olds, this non-verbal story uses simple design and object manipulation to create an imaginative world where anything can happen. The endearing and funny performance is by London-based Daryl Beeton Productions, a go-to company for work produced by Disabled artists and theatre makers which puts creative access and inclusion of at the heart of all its work.

Mark Babych, Artistic Director of Hull Truck Theatre, says: “As always we are proud partners of Hull’s Freedom Festival, it is a vital part of Hull’s cultural ecology and performances always go down an absolute storm. I’m sure this year’s will be no exception, and after a difficult year it will be wonderful to experience comedy and laughter back where it belongs – in front of a live audience. I’m also delighted to welcome back the phenomenally talented Eliza Carthy and want to thank audience who have held on to their tickets for so long!
