Today is International Volunteering Day and a chance to celebrate all the fantastic people who volunteer.

Some of the most recognised volunteers in Hull are the HEY! Volunteers who are now part of Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY). Over the past year the HEY! Volunteers have completed more than 20,000 volunteering hours across 7,500 volunteering opportunities.

A host of familiar faces from around the city and East Yorkshire took the time to say thank you to HEY! Volunteers.

Council Leader, Councillor Mike Ross said: “Hull and East Yorkshire’s volunteers are known as the perfectly fitting big, blue wave of positivity!

“International Volunteering Day is a great chance to celebrate the work of the volunteers, and to say thank you to everyone who has volunteered and been an ambassador for our city, greeting people with enthusiasm and knowledge and making Hull a friendlier city.

“Thank you to everyone who gives their time for free, and who volunteers in any capacity –  you are doing a wonderful thing.”

The volunteer programme began in 2016 to support Hull’s year as UK City of Culture. Its success and the impact on the city is still being felt more than six years on, with Hull City Council and East Riding Council now playing host to the important programme.

Around 2,500 HEY! volunteers now support arts, culture and heritage across the region, identifiable by their iconic blue coats.
