Rewind 10 years and it Hull was pretty limited on choice when we fancied somewhere to eat with good oriental flavours. Mr Chu’s, May Sum and China Red were pretty much all that we had available but now there’s so much more on offer!
Here are my top 10 oriental restaurant choices in Hull & East Yorkshire for when you’re in the mood for something that little more exotic.
Viet Memories
3 Brook St, Hull HU2 8LA
Open Mon – Wed & Fri – Sat 12pm – 9pm, Sun 12pm – 6pm
Healthy and delicious, Viet Memories is a real treat just waiting to be uncovered in the city centre. It is highly rated, ranks as Hull’s top Asian restaurant on Tripadvisor and received the Traveller’s Choice Award. If you’re looking for healthy food delivered or a bite to eat after a workout, then Viet Memories is for you.
Long An Restaurant
Paragon Square, 2-4 Paragon St, Hull HU1 3QT
Wed & Thu, 5pm – 10pm; Fri 5pm – 11pm; Sat 12pm – 11pm; Sun 12pm – 9pm (Closed Mon & Tue)
This is a fairly new addition to Hull, it only opened late last year and is the sister restaurant to Viet Memories. It’s exclusively Vietnamese food which apparently is similar to Thai cuisine. The presentation looks fantastic and it has an extensive vegan menu which sounds incredible. With excellent reviews too, it’s one to try if you’re looking for something new.
Thai House Restaurant
51 Princes Ave, Hull HU5 3QY
Open Thu – Sun 5pm – 9pm
Long-standing Thai House restaurant on Prinny Ave is renowned for its quality Thai cuisine. The service is excellent and it received the Traveller’s Choice Award on Tripadvisor. There’s a ‘Kids Eat Free’ offer on right now too so worth booking a table.
Yinjibar
1C Charles St, Hull HU2 8DF
Open Tue – Thu 3pm – 10pm, Fri – Sun 12pm – 10pm
Yinjibar is a stellar Chinese restaurant with authentic cuisine that is sure to delight; the dim sum is particularly famous, so be sure to visit for some lunch. It’s really good quality food, yet Yinjibar is surprisingly affordable.
Wok&Go
Ferensway, Hull HU2 8LN
Open Mon – Sun 11am – 9pm
Wok&Go is perfect for when you need a quick bite to eat. It’s fast but made fresh so if you work in the city centre and fancy a hot, quick, fresh lunch then Wok&Go is ideal. There’s something for everyone, including gluten-free and vegan options made from scratch in minutes.
Tanyalak
35 George St, Hull HU1 3BA
Open Tue – Fri 11:30am – 3pm & 5pm – 9pm, Sat 11:30am – 10pm,
Sun 5pm – 9pm
Tanyalak is a great addition to Hull city centre. It’s Thai street food inspired menu really hits home and the flavours are incredible. It’s a pretty impressive menu with good vegeterian options and it’s really affordable. They have a lunch menu for around £7 per person.
China Red
Beverley Rd, Dunswell, Hull HU6 0AD
Open Mon, Wed-Thu & Sun 4:30pm – 10pm, Fri – Sat 4:30pm – 10:30pm
China Red is one of the longest standing oriental restaurants in Hull and is probably the most famous entry in my top 10. Located in Dunswell just on the outskirts of Hull, it was formerly the Coach & Horses pub, but was converted in 2000. It’s known for its authentic Chinese cuisine and ornate decor, plus the reviews are still going good after all these years. Definitely worth a visit if you’ve never been.
Wings International Cusine
119 Ferensway, Hull HU1 3UN
Open Mon – Sat, 11:45am – 3:30pm & 5pm – 10:30pm, Sun 12pm – 10:30pm
I couldn’t have a top 10 without including Wings International Cuisine on Ferensway. This is an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant which is actually good quality. There’s a huge choice on the menu, particularly in the evenings which, for just £15-ish per head, is really good value.
For me and my family, it’s perfect when we can’t decide what to eat. Although there’s Indian, Italian and many other international cuisines, it’s the oriental choices here that make it into my top 10; Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai and more. For me, it’s Hull’s ultimate ‘all-you-can-eat’ and it’s great if you want to broaden your palette or keep the kid’s busy.
Due to COVID restrictions, it’s no longer a self-serve buffet, but instead they serve it fresh to your table… for me, a big plus!
Cheng & Chen
Trinity Market, 57 Market Place, Unity F10, Hull HU1 1RS
Open Mon – Sat 11:30am – 3pm
A team favourite, Cheng & Chen takes fresh and delicious to another level. If you’re looking for some tasty, quick, oriental street food, head here. They’re located in Hull Trinity Market and seem passionate about their East Asian food which includes Chinese, Thai and Japanese cuisine.
Sumo Pan Asian
Unit b, 12a Flemingate, Beverley HU17 0EE
Mon – Sun 5pm – 9pm
40 Prestongate, Hessle HU13 0RE
Wed – Mon 5pm – 9pm
Sumo opened their first take-out on Newland back in 2015, but have since opened two stylish restaurants in Beverley and Hessle. Sumo has a wide-range of dishes on their menu, all inspired by East Asian cuisine, and trust me, it’s an experience that you won’t forget. Wagamamma really doesn’t have anything on this place, trust me!
So that’s my top 10. What about yours? Let us know in the comments.
