Hull History Centre is opening its first in-house exhibition for two and a half years.

The centre has catalogued acquisitions made over 100 years and has uncovered a wealth of local history resources.

The “Unlocking the Treasures, Revealing the Past” exhibition is the culmination of a 2.5-year project funded by the James Reckitt Library Trust to transform access to the Local Studies books and archive collections.

The exhibition showcases unique images and documents from the Local Studies Library collections. It explores the well-remembered Mackman’s Bakery, Hull in the 1920s as well as Hull’s whaling industry.

The court housing scene lets visitors imagine the sights, smells, and sounds of life in Hull from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Discovery Hub provides the opportunity to uncover more about Bransholme, East Park, sport in Hull and Stoneferry with the new Discovery Boxes, containing hands-on reproductions of original photographs and documents.

LEGO and drawing materials are on hand for children with families who might be inspired by Hull’s Victorian housing to design some of their own.

Councillor Alison Collinson, Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Ltd said: “I encourage residents to take advantage of this fantastic free exhibition which gives a remarkable insight into Hull’s history.”

The exhibition is free and will run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from Tuesday 9 August until Thursday 22 September at the Hull History Centre.
