Hull’s rubbish tips to undergo big change sooner than expected

The seven-day reopening of Hull’s popular recycling centres has been brought forward to keep up with public demand.

From Monday 26 July Hull’s three household waste and recycling centres will reopen seven days a week, 10am-5pm, giving residents more flexibility on when they can dispose of their household waste.

This means that the centres, which are located in Burma Drive, Sutton Fields and Wiltshire Road, will also open on Wednesdays and Thursdays, just in time for the school holidays.

Councillor Rosie Nicola, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services at Hull City Council, said: “We’ve brought the opening date forward because we are aware that over the summer holidays site usage tends to increase as more families stay at home and undertake DIY, home and garden projects.

“By listening to public feedback we’ve recognised that there is a need for the three waste centres to be open seven days a week. There has been an increase in people using our sites over the last 18 months, so this will cut waiting times, queues and improve customer experience.

“This is great news for our residents and in order to keep up with the demand we’re taking steps to revert back to the previous opening times and I know this will complement our existing excellent waste services.”

Figures show that over three-quarters of the waste taken to the HWRCs is recycled and the centres also play a crucial part in supplying electrical items suitable for re-use to the Electricals Re-use Shop in Marfleet Lane.

Residents are encouraged to donate working fridges, tumble driers and washing machines as the items sold at the shop raises money for charity Dove House Hospice.

So far the donations have helped Dove House Hospice to be able to support local families with bereavement support, therapy sessions and music therapy.

The HWRCs are open every Bank Holiday except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years’ Day and are for the exclusive use of Hull residents only.
