Humber Street Sesh 2021 cancelled: ‘too risky to go ahead’

Humber Street Sesh, the annual music festival on Hull Marina will not go ahead this year as planned.

The large-scale event, which provides a platform for emerging musicians and artists was cancelled last year and has been beset by obstacles and difficulties making it impossible to continue with plans for 2021.

Festival organisers, Sesh Events had planned to put the event on in September 2021, later than usual, as a precautionary measure, in anticipation of delays in restrictions easing but with the current lack of clarity around operating large-scale events; staffing uncertainties arising from the ‘pingdemic’ and the inability to obtain insurance, it has proved too risky to go ahead.

Organisers have worked tirelessly on plans for the festival this year but have been besieged by additional difficulties concerning the festival site.

On-going A63 developments resulted in the festival losing the west side of the Marina and Humber Quays and consequently plans were in place for a reduced site and capacity. But devastating recent news of potential delays in flood defence barrier work have provoked fears that Nelson Street and the piers would be unavailable.

Dave Mays, Festival Site Director said “The potential loss of significant areas of the site would decimate the festival. We would not be able to deliver the Humber Street Sesh that people know and love”

The Sesh team have been battling difficulties since the cancellation of the event last year and the financial loss incurred, which was compounded by a rejection for Cultural Recovery Funding, followed by the current state of uncertainty and risk surrounding operating large-scale events and the final blow of festival site problems.

Festival directors, Dave Mays, Mark Page and Justine Peacock agreed “Faced with insurmountable obstacles and difficulties, it is with a heavy heart that we have decided to pull the event this year.”

Mark Page said “It is heart-breaking that we are unable to deliver our much-loved community festival this year, particularly for the musicians, artists and production who have missed live performance so much in recent times but mark my words – we will be back”

Festival organisers would like to thank the sponsors who pledged their support for this year’s event and hope that they will continue to support them in 2022.

Existing Humber Street Sesh ticket holders who booked via See Tickets, Gigantic and Hull Theatres (Hull Culture and Leisure) will receive a refund in due course.
