During the past 12 months, professional volunteers have collectively contributed over 58,000 hours of their time, playing a vital part in helping to keep the area safe and helping the force to protect vulnerable people across Hull, East Yorkshire and the Northern Lincolnshire area.
All of these hours have been volunteered since restrictions were put in place by the Government to combat the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the UK.
The dedicated team of volunteers include Special Constables who over the last year have given more than 48,000 hours of their own personal time to ‘front line’ policing.
Special constables have the same powers, uniform and responsibilities as full-time police officers but volunteer when they can managing this role alongside their full-time employment.
During the force’s response to the pandemic, the Special Constables have continued to fulfil their duties alongside their full-time employment continuing to provide that reassurance to our communities.
Community Support Volunteers in Humberside hold a range of bespoke roles including Mobile Rural Watch, Welfare Checkers, Vehicle Checkers, Cybercrime and Fraud Ambassadors and Role Players who help to train officers, to name but a few.
Between them, they have volunteered over 10,000 hours of their time over the last year, undertaking vital tasks such as delivering safe and well letters to vulnerable people, packing over six thousand activity packs for children and volunteering at vaccination centres to help the NHS.
In Humberside, the youngest volunteers are the 96 Police Cadets, who contribute at least three hours a month alongside their Cadet Leaders.
Their contribution includes assisting with local community events, supporting the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams through leaflet drops, crime prevention initiatives, community safety events and helping as role-play volunteers in the training of student police officers and Special Constables.
They have continued to go from strength to strength by facing the challenges of new ways of learning and further developing their knowledge and understanding of what we do to help make our local communities safer.
Chief Constable Lee Freeman said: “The last 12 months has been exceptionally challenging for us all and our volunteers have again continued to play a key role in supporting the force in continuing to be there for our communities.
