The creation of a new wet berth for the Spurn Lightship has moved a step closer with contractors now being invited to show an interest in delivering this element of the Hull Maritime project.

To berth the Spurn Lightship in Hull Marina for many visitors to enjoy, Hull City Council requires the services of a specialist contractor to construct a wet berth on the northwest corner of Hull Marina, close to the Holiday Inn and Murdoch’s Connection.

The restoration of the Spurn Lightship and its new berth is part of Hull Maritime, a council-led project funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Highways. Work to restore the lightship will be complete this autumn and the ship will move to a temporary position on Hull Marina until the new dock is complete in early 2023.

Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “The search is on for a specialist contractor to build a new permanent berth for the city’s lightship.

“This popular visitor attraction will once again take pride of place on Hull Marina for residents and visitors to explore and enjoy.

“I am looking forward to seeing the Spurn return to the marina and act as a key signpost for the city and a nod to our maritime heritage.”

To enable these works to take place, National Highways, which is carrying out major improvements to the A63 at Castle Street, awarded Hull City Council £1,044,725 through its Designated Funds programme. This money is allocated to four funding streams focused on making improvements that will make the biggest difference and deliver lasting benefits, including environment and wellbeing.

Myles Cotton, National Highways Project Manager, said: “We’re proud to support such an important community project for Hull. We’re looking forward to working with partners to take the creation of the wet berth forward and restore an icon of the city’s maritime heritage.

“The project will further enhance this outstanding public space, placing the Spurn Lightship next to the award-winning Murdoch’s Connection footbridge, which opened to the public in February 2021.”

The tender details are now live on the Council’s electronic tender portal and on Contracts Finder.

Work is anticipated to start on site in the autumn.

It is expected the Spurn Lightship will open to visitors in summer 2023.

The restoration of the Spurn Lightship is part of Hull Maritime. Other elements of the project include the refurbishment of the Grade II* Hull Maritime Museum and the Dock Office Chambers, the creation of a new visitor attraction at the North End Shipyard which will become the new home of the Arctic Corsair.
