Hull’s local libraries will play host to a series of chess events open to the public, starting this weekend.

The ‘chess sesh’ events are free and open to all ages, existing chess players and those who want to learn and have fun.

Those who attend can meet experienced chess players from the Hull and District Chess Association, who will give out expert playing tips and advice on how to get involved in chess within the city.

The library events are part of the Play Chess Festival, which started in August and has spanned three months – due to finish in October.

The festival has taken place in Hull’s parks, squares, libraries, shops, markets, cafés and pubs and has included Large Play Days, live chess sessions in Queen Victoria Square and Chessfest in Trinity Square & Market.

The festival was kick-started with an exciting game of underwater chess, played by two expert divers in the world-famous local landmark, the Deep.

Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “It’s been fantastic to see all the events taking place within different areas of the city as part of the festival and we’re looking forward to the upcoming events in Hull Libraries.

“As a game that spans all ages, the festival has been an excellent opportunity for everyone to learn chess and it’s great we have local chess enthusiasts who encourage participation and offer expertise.”

The programme will culminate in the British Chess Championships in October.
