Love Local: Five independent garden centres to visit in Hull and East Yorkshire

As part of the continued Love Local series, the focus, this time, is on independent garden centre which, as the summer starts to make its presence known, will, likely, become places of great interest for the green-fingered amongst us. Therefore, this article presents five independent must-see garden centres in Hull and East Yorkshire.

Southwood Garden Centre

Ganton Ave, Cottingham HU16 5HG

A small family-run business located in the leafy suburb of Cottingham, Southwood Garden Centre is probably the garden centre equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife as they sell anything one with green fingers could ever desire. Interestingly, Southwood also houses a rustic farm shop that sells home-grown produce from the eponymous Southwood Farm and carefully selected local produce from around East Yorkshire. Healthy living and sustainability is all the rave at the minute, as it arguably should be; with somewhere like Southwood on the doorstep, accessing the means by which to live healthily and sustainably has never been easier. What is more, Southwood also houses Lucy’s Coffee Shop which offers a wide selection of tasty refreshments, making this garden centre a destination as opposed to somewhere more fleeting. Coletta and Tyson Garden Centre

324 Hull Rd, Woodmansey, Beverley HU17 0RU

Coletta and Tyson Garden Centre, a long-standing horticultural haven in Beverley, is another family-run business with an extravagant plant selection accompanied by the typical garden effects and an award-winning Christmas department! Interestingly, much like Southwood, Coletta and Tyson is home to the Old Glasshouse Café in addition to the Old Glasshouse Deli which sells an array of cupboard essentials and quality sauces, wine, and ales making Coletta and Tyson a go-to destination for first-rate produce. Evergreens Garden Centres

Evergreens, nestled away in Bilton, is a self-described hidden treasure. Unique in the sense that it is amply equipped with an experienced floral service, Evergreens is capable of providing flowers for any occasion. With that in mind, be sure to visit Evergreens if you are looking to extend a flowery gift, condolence, or celebration to someone! Additionally, Evergreens provides an enviable selection of garden ornaments, the highlight of these is certainly the adorable snowmen (available from £29.99 each) dressed up in decorative coloured scarves. Hornsea Garden Centre

Hornsea Road, HU11 5QL

A little bit further afield, but well worth the trip, Hornsea Garden Centre is one of the largest in the country and home to a well-stocked selection of plants, tools, accessories, landscape, and buildings. Happily, the plant department at Hornsea is remarkable and incredibly versatile, catering for everyone. Of interest here is the stay at home and grow your own section, underlining the commitment of all at Hornsea Garden Centre to get Britain growing, as it were, this section offers anything from heritage vegetables to the rough and ready potato allowing everyone who is willing to grow their own produce at home. Again, Hornsea is well-prepared to quench the thirst and hunger of all customers thanks to the Gardener’s Retreat Restaurant and Coffee Haven. LW Plants & Design

53 Whitefriargate, Hull HU1 2HP

Unlike the others on this list, LW Plants & Design is not technically a garden centre rather it specialises in indoor plants in addition to all the associated care and design products. Found on the resurgent former high street of Whitefriargate, LW takes great pride in its stunning selection of terrariums (an indoor miniature garden) and even offers regular workshop classes on how to build your own. Furthermore, LW has an in-house coffee shop which, alongside the typical liquid delights, offers several sweet treats and presents itself as a welcome option to all those who traverse the cobbled pavements of Whitefriargate. Intriguingly, LW has a sister business in Nanouk, a recently opened botanical bar on Market Place, that offers a funky range of plant-inspired tipples.
