Love Local: Hull’s incredible independent clothing stores

I am a proud T-shirt and jeans guy and cannot consider myself a fashion guru although having lived in Hull for five years and I am well-aware and indeed capable of appreciating the wondering independent clothes shops that our city has to offer. Indeed, on more than one occasion I have heard of out-of-towners coming to Hull for the day just to attend said shops. In that spirit, this article contains some of the finest independent clothes shops which I believe will be of considerable interest to Hullensians and out-of-towners alike.

Cock of the Walk Bespoke Tailors

9 Grimston St, HU1 3HG

Cock of the Walk Bespoke Tailors, housed in a rather unsuspecting workshop on Grimston Street, is arguably the premier destination for formal wear in our fair city of Hull. Cock of the Walk oozes quality courtesy of Saville Row trained Master Tailor, Gillian Long, and her staff who lovingly craft—by their own hand—each garment from start to finish under the tutelage of their guiding principle that ‘the person who measures you, should be the person who cuts your suit and oversees every stitch’.

With that in mind, it is time for a message to the gentlemen and gentlewomen of Hull: if you do require (or, simply want) a new formal wear number, pop down to Cock of the Walk and indulge in their full or semi-bespoke service—you will not be disappointed!

Happily, Cock of the Walk is open from 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday.

Reads Footwear

2 Savile St, HU1 3EF

Working from their emporium like Savile Street shop, Mark Read and his nephew Richard offer a simple concept: the highest quality footwear and accessories fused with personal service and knowledgeable advice.

Here, one will find the very best of British footwear alongside carefully selected pieces from abroad, and testament to their appeal, I feel obliged to succumb to over-subjectivity and simply state that the product is outstanding.

Mark and Richard are available to offer a first-class buying experience at the city centre store from 10:00 to 16:00 Monday to Saturday.

The Vintage Store

St Stephen’s Shopping Centre, 8 Ferensway, HU2 8LN

The nascent yet burgeoning The Vintage Store has recently taken over the former Topshop unit in St Stephen’s following a successful stint on Paragon Street last year. The Vintage Store claims to be the UK’s largest retailer of vintage clothing and on the strength of their St Stephens shop—which is chock-full of vintage dress and accoutrements—they may well have a claim to this title.

Inside, thrifters are likely to wile away many hours goggling at what is on offer the highlight of which includes almost every brand I can possibly name and more. If the aforementioned lack sufficient pull, perhaps the recent list of Led Zeppelin rocker Robert Plant ought to do it.

Hullensians can indulge in a vintage extravaganza at The Vintage Store between the hours of 09:00 and 17:00 Monday to Sunday.

Filthy Gorgeous Boutique

350 Holderness Rd, Garden Village, HU9 3DQ

Admittedly, I feel slightly out of my depth talking about Filthy Gorgeous Boutique because, well, I am a man; however, my girlfriend has assured me that, owing to the quality of their product, I cannot go far wrong. Based in East Hull, Filthy Gorgeous Boutique is run by sisters Maria and Molly and sells unique and affordable on-trend fashion for women and children.

At first glance, and because of my relative inexperience, there is far too much to mention and I can only suggest a visit to the shop to remedy your intrigue; although, if that is not possible, Filthy Gorgeous Boutique does operate a comprehensive website. Merrily, for anyone looking to pinch a bargain, Filthy Gorgeous Boutique is currently offering a £10 and £5 frenzy sale.

Pop on over to the Filthy Gorgeous Boutique shop between 10:00 and 16:30 Monday to Wednesday and 10:00 to 17:00 Thursday to Saturday.

New Amsterdam 1933

Unit 43, Prospect Shopping Centre, HU2 8PW

New Amsterdam 1933 buys, sells, and trades new and used clothing with, dare I say, a focus on quality and branded items. New Amsterdam is the ideal location for Hullensians looking for clothing numbers that are different, rare, or individual. Having grazed over their website, the retro tracksuit tops and vintage Harrington jackets look particularly attractive. Interestingly, the New Amsterdam shop is an art form in itself, giving off something of a dystopian industrial appeal.

Visit New Amsterdam between 10:00 and 16:00 Monday to Saturday.

Poorboy Boutique

17 Humber St, Hull HU1 1TH

Poorboy Boutique presents vintage clothing with a twist, priding itself on stocking only the best, high-end branded clothing which accords to their catchy slogan, ‘I’m the captain of my style’. Situated on the urban tempest of Hull that is Humber Street, Poorboy’s exclusive and trendy location certainly matches its style; moreover, it is certainly opportunely placed for a spot of weekend shopping! The last time I had the pleasure of dropping into Poorboy, I spotted a beautiful Western-style jacket alongside a shelf garnished with a very healthy selection of jeans.

Visit Poorboy between 11:00-16:00 Tuesday to Friday; 11:00 and 17:00 on Saturdays; and 10:30 and 16:30 on Sundays.

Chinese Laundry

1 Savile St, HU1 3ES

An ever-present in Hull’s independent clothing scene, Savile Street-based Chinese Laundry specialise in vintage as well as alternative clothing and are proud stockists of Warrior and Pop Boutique Clothing; interestingly, they now have their own in-house label named Re-Rinsed. Happily, Chinese Laundry has recently expanded into the recently-opened Hammonds of Hull; a sure sign of their ambition and capability! Additionally, Chinese Laundry also has nascent stores in York and Leeds so keep your eyes out if you are intending to travel to either of these Northern powerhouses in the future.

Visit Chinese Laundry between 10:00 and 17:00 Monday to Friday; 10:00 and 17:30 on Saturdays; and 11:00 and 16:30 on Sundays.

Beasleys

17 Hepworth Arcade, Silver St, HU1 1JU

Based in the resplendent Victorian masterpiece that is Hepworth Arcade, Beasleys is an emporium-like feast of vintage and alternative clothing. I have regularly waxed lyrical about Beasley’s in my writing and am reticent to regurgitate my approbations; however, it would be remiss of me not to sing their praises once more.

On the ground floor, Beasley’s plays host to an ever-growing inventory of alternative brands such as Dickies; Ben Davis; Brixton; Salt Water; Blundstone; and YKRA with (in my opinion) the highlight of that selection is the Blundstone 500’s and 510’s which are available for £135. What is more, the top floor of Beasleys is chock-full of vintage and army surplus where one can find an opulence of bargains and stylish numbers—it has become my go-to destination for Levi 501 jeans. However, above all else, expect a warm welcome in Beasleys; every member of staff that I have had the delight of talking to has been charming and delightfully forthcoming.

Visit Beasleys between 11:00 and 16:00 Monday to Saturday.

Dove House Hospice

64-66 Whitefriargate, HU1 2HU

The Dove House Hospice shop on former shopping high-street Whitefriargate has a substantial collection of vintage clothing that will be of interest to any and all thrifters in our city. However, the real value of Dove House Hospice lies in its role as a hospice charity that cares for adults across Hull and the East Riding who have illnesses that are incurable and those who shop here can rest easy in the knowledge that their money is going towards a more than worthwhile cause. Notably, Dove House Hospice has shops all over the city.

Visit Dove House Hospice between 09:00 and 17:00 Monday to Saturday.

19point4

26 Humber St, HU1 1TH

Another favourite of my girlfriend’s, 19point4 is a fashion and homeware store on Humber Street which specialises in selling trend-led fashion and home décor brands with the former being our focus in this article. Now, the first thing to mention about 19point4 is that it is a purveyor of affordable prices which means one can get their hands on in-vogue numbers from the colourful stock with relative ease.

Additionally, 19point4 also sells a vast array of jewellery and accessories which are nourished by one-off and exclusive home-brand designs giving one the opportunity to find fashion that is not available anywhere else.

Bed Boutique

14 Newland Ave, HU5 3AF

A ladies’ clothes boutique offering a wide range of dresses, bags, and jewellery, Bed Boutique is a destination that women looking for on-trend affordable fashion cannot afford to neglect. Interestingly, as I have mentioned elsewhere, Bed Boutique featured on the recent hit female-led comedy Hullraisers.

Visit Bed Boutique between 10:00 and 17:00 Tuesday to Saturday and 11:00 to 15:00 on Mondays.

SupplyHaus

Paragon Arcade, Paragon St, HU1 3PQ

A new addition to Paragon Arcade (and a welcome one at that), SupplyHaus sells vintage workwear and military clothing from a shop that is drenched in the ambiance of a 1940s and 50s general store. Admittedly, I am yet to visit Supply Haus but I have heard very welcome reviews; however, that has not stopped me from browsing their extensive stock as SupplyHaus has an in-depth website where one can find almost anything within the workwear and military clothing categories.

Sadly, my attempts to find the working hours of SupplyHaus have been fruitless; although, common sense dictates that it is likely worthwhile visiting during normal business hours.

BagIt Vintage Clothing

Unit G34, Princes Quay, HU1 2PQ

Taking its inspiration from the successful kilo sale concept, Princes Quay-based BagIt Vintage Clothing offers punters the opportunity to fill a bag with as many vintage gems as they possibly can which is then priced according to its weight. Happily, this provides one with an affordable way of shopping sustainably whilst bagging some trendy items at the same time!

Visit BagIt Vintage between 10:30 and 17:30 Monday to Saturday and 10:30 and 16:30 on Sundays.
